I am a rising senior applying to engineering colleges, hoping to study engineering and computer science. I currently have one teacher recommendation from my 10th grade computer science teacher, and I have another from my 11th grade AP Lang teacher. Should I instead be getting a recommendation from my 11th grade math teacher? I know my Lang teacher likes me a bit more than my 11th grade math teacher, but just in the interest of having a rec from my math teacher, should I take the math teacher recommendation?
I don’t think it’s too critical in this case, and who knows, maybe it’s better to have some variety. I remember I got my letters from my science teacher and my English teacher, neither of which had any relevance to my intended psych major.
What matters more is that the teachers can write a strong, glowing letter of recommendation for you. Not what subject they taught.
I mean, if they can write you a great rec and also be in your subject of interest, that’s great, but its not a requirement (unless a college makes it a requirement).
Find out what the schools require. Some are quite specific about which grades/subjects are needed. Ask early, thank nicely.
For STEM Majors try to have recent STEM teachers.
