Does anyone have any experience with these programs?
Especially interested in one's that focus on short stories as opposed to poetry. Thanks.

What age group are you looking for?
High School, College, post grad?

HS-my D is a junior. Sorry.

There is one at the University of Iowa. I don't know too much about it except that a friend's D who is really into creative writing attended last summer after her junior year of h.s. Here is the link - http://www.uiowa.edu/%7Eiyws/tableofcontents.htm

Go to this page, scroll down to see links for creative writing

I would recommend Northwestern University's Equinox program. It is through the Center for Talent Development. In the past they have had a creative writing seminar.

If you are not familiar with Northwestern, the location is easy walk to downtown Evanston, shop, restaurants. There is also a beach nearby.

My daughter went to programs at the Center in grade school and sports camps at Northwestern. Very well run programs.

Someone I know attended Breadloaf and loved it. Not sure, but it may be at Middlebury.

My son was very interested in this program at Kenyon (but ended up going to Bali instead.) The Kenyon Review as you probably know is one of the oldest and most revered writing journals. Gambier is a lovely place but not high on the excitement scale. From a parent's point a view a good place for a teenager (although your teenager may disagree).

I know a student that enjoyed the program at Carleton College and made real progress with her general writing skills:

Daughter went to Duke's (Duke TIP) which was located at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. It was wonderful. I don't know if they still offer it. That was 5 summers ago.

Lewis & Clark in Portland, Oregon has a good two week creative writing program for high school students called the Fir Acres Workshop. I have heard good reports from two students who attended. http://www.lclark.edu/org/firacres/
