Recommendations for GRE Math Studying

Hey guys! I’m slowly beginning to study for the GRE, and it is becoming abundantly clear to me that I cannot do the math section at all. I haven’t taken this kind of math in five years, and I just don’t remember how to do any of it. Since the GRE tests pre-college math, I’m sure this is a common problem that people run into. Does anybody have recommendations for how to relearn it? Any good online courses/books/other resources? How long did it take you to relearn? I’m trying not to panic because I know the knowledge is in my brain somewhere; I just need to find it again.

My D did really well with Manhattan’s online program.

The Khan Academy was useful when I needed some refresher tutorials. Other than that I used Kaplan and the download from ETS. The GRE uses the same question types over and over, so practice the ones you are struggling with as much as possible and carefully read the answer explanations.

What subject would you be studying in grad school? It helps to know what kind of scores you need to be competitive.

@cosmicfish haha the questions I have regarding that are enough for five different threads. At this point I’ll most likely take a year or two off to work and figure out the exact field I want to go into, but it’ll almost definitely be something related to policy. Some programs I’ve looked into are public policy, public health, public administration, health administration, and education policy. This summer might (hopefully) point me in a better direction, but for now it’ll probably either be broad policy or something specific within policy, if that helps at all.

I bought the Manhattan Prep book set. I think it was like 8ish books, 6 of which were on math. It really helped me! I’d highly recommend it. I spent most of the time studying for the math (not my strong suit) and really only studied for the verbal section by doing GRE vocab flash cards. I did fine, but your mileage may vary!

I’ve heard really good things about Sherpa Prep, a prep company in D.C. A friend of mine took their course and raved about it. You can find their math books on Amazon and on iTunes.
