recommendations needed...

hey guys, I recently joined CC and I am going to become a junior this fall. I started looking at some colleges and I just wanted people to recommend me some colleges to take a look at based on my description below.
I go to an all Girls school in NYC. From Freshman year till my sophomore year I maintained an average of 96% overall. My school doesn’t allow students to take APs until their junior year so this year I will be taking AP US, AP environmental science and AP lang and composition. and i will work very hard to maintain my average even though I am taking harder courses now.

my extracurricular are as follows.
1)Student government for 2 yrs. hoping to become the president this year.
2)Femcho ( 2 yrs and will continue… its a health and fitness club)
3)Debate Club - well… when I was in ninth grade I was the vice president but then our clubs got cancelled due to our school not having enough money so I joined the New York City Urban debate league and I paid the tuition $100 a month by tutoring kids in my neighborhood. I won several city awards such as best speaker ad best partner since I went maverick. My partner ditched. But this year I going to work very hard and bring debate back to our school .
4)Taek won do for 2 yrs.( I really love doing this). Oh and I am a purple belt fighter now. I work very hard in the gym. Spend most of the weekend there.
5)Volunteering at queens community house for 1 year and started volunteering at Mount Sinai hospital.

My special talent is Art. I do sculpting and love doing it. Some of the materials I work with is making 70 feet tall animals out of cardboard, clay, air dry clay, candles, plaster, I usually do sculpting and painting over the summer to pass time and I love doing it. I am also considering writing a graphic novel. My English teacher encouraged me to do so. and unfortunately I don’t a an art class at school but we cant choose our classes in my school. But I have taken some college 2D and 3D classes at a local college.
I am taking the new SAT and my goal is 1500+ and already started practicing .
Sat subject test scores are
Bio M I got -775 I think not sure right now but over 700 for sure
taking US history this spring and math level II expecting at least 700 and + . Have been studying very hard for it.
I am the first generation to go to college and I am south Asian. I wasn’t born here but I am a citizen and don’t really know if colleges will hold that against me.

I want to become a cardiologist and a part time artist.

But please give me some recommended colleges that you guys think I will like. I will take a look at your advice and I just want to thank everyone in advance for replying to me.

Thank you .

It’s impossible to recommend colleges when you don’t have any test scores yet. Come back when you’ve actually taken them and we’ll have some schools for you

oh also the place I volunteer at (Queens community house) I usually help kids with their HW and then teach them to draw

I’m just wondering what would happen if @Zana123 sculpted a 50 foot tall animal out of rebar. Would the 70 footers develop more chutzpah and try to eat it? Or would the fact it’s made of rebar keep it safe from the taller creatures made of cardboard and clay?

Let’s see if we can narrow down your focus.

-You currently go to an all girls school. Do you want to continue to an all girl’s college, or are you thinking Coed?

  • You have a 96 average, so you’re smart. That’s good.
  • You'll be taking the PSATs this fall, right? Did you take them as a sophomore? (The kids in my school take them both years.) Once you get those numbers, you can check the Common Data Set for any school you're interested in (google them for each school.) That will tell you things like the 25th and 75th percentile SAT scores they typically admit-- you can extrapolate from your PSAT scores to let you know whether you should be considering those schools.
  • Let's talk finances. For my own kids, that's a prime issue. Talk with your parents about what you can reasonably afford.
  • Stay home or go away? And, if it's away, how far? We're on LI. My son has a rough radius of about 4 hours-- that's pretty much from Boston to Baltimore, and west past Scranton. There are a LOT of schools in that radius. And it will enable him to get home when he wants to.
  • Take a look at SUNY. There are a LOT of different campuses, from those VERY close to home to those on the Canadian border. They're a great value.
  • Like you, my son was born in Asia-- he was adopted from Korea. I'm not sure what that means, big picture, and we're not going to sweat it, since it's not something within our control.
  • Do you have any idea what you're thinking in terms of size of school? He's found that he's most comfortable in a small school, so that's eliminated a number of schools from our search.
  • Likewise, how about setting? Rural, suburban, urban?

It’s absolutely OK to have no idea at this point of a lot of the answers.

Why not use the College Match feature here? Enter what you’re thinking at the moment, and see what comes up. Start a Word document: a table listing things like school name, location, distance from home, price, size, link to the school’s site. When you get the chance one weekend, see whether your parents can get you to one or two. \

Also, my school has reps from colleges visit after school in the fall. Each day they announce which reps are there-- I’m sure there’s a list in the guidance office as well. Make a habit of stopping by, just to see.

thank you @bjkmom. I have taken the PSAT as a sophomore for the first time without any practice before and scored a 1785. However the SAT is changing so I started studying for the new version. I would like to attend a coed school. Its not that I don’t like all girls school but its because i want to experience college with both genders. and also I live in NYC and i would like to go out of state if i get into colleges of my choice with good financial aid.

and do you know if colleges(admission officers) treat students differently who weren’t born here? thanks in advance

Don’t sweat the change in the SAT. I would imagine that for the vast majority of kids, the percentile score will be very similar to the old test.

So if your dream school has 2000 spots open, and the old SAT would have gotten you a seat there, I imagine the new one will as well.

If you are a U.S. citizen it doesn’t matter where you are born, even permanent residents with green cards all treated the same, they are in the US pool as opposed to the smaller international pool.

You are expected to step up the course rigor as a Jr. Why are you talking enviro as your AP instead of a core science if you want to be premed?

What does good financial aid mean to your family? Can they pay their EFC? Cost is often the main driving factor.

For expensive privates you might want to look at arty LACs, LACs are excellent for premed. Also there are tons of places.here is a good thread to read to give some more info.

My school doesn’t offer any other AP science but I will try to take bio in college if I find one. If I take this bio class in college and pass the exam then I will get like 3 college credits I heard.

i don’t want to pay for college. But i do want to get into Yale because I know they have a really good med program and also a really good art programs. These are two things i have lived for so far since i was like five.

@BrownParent what are some classes i should be taking in high school to get into a school with awesome med program? Can you please tell me if i have any weakness, strength, need improvement based on my resume/DESCRIPTION above. I am asking because i don’t have anyone to guide me.

How does anyone score a 178.5 on a PSAT? Not possible.

But you said you are taking AP Enviro Science so why do you say you don’t have AP science? Make sure you take one each of physics, chem and bio and honors if they have it , and AP in at least one if they have it.

From high school you won’t be applying to a medical program, right? Or are you trying to apply to some combined BS/MD program? When you go to undergraduate school you aren’t going to a medical program. You are going for a BA or BS. As long as you take the requirements for medical schools, about 6 or 7 classes you will be eligible. Join any premed advising once you are in college. There are also premed forums here that you can browse to get an idea.

When you say 1500 SAT you are talking just M+CR?

“I don’t want to pay for college?” What does this mean? How else are you going to be able to go? Yale, for instance, doesn’t give merit scholarships and your will have to pay your family and student contribution as Yale calculates it using family income.

I am sorry. I am taking AP environmental but my school doesn’t offer any other AP science. and I will be taking the new SAT and the highest you can get is 1600 and I am hoping and studying for a 1500+ that’s what I meant. Sorry for the confusion :"> when I said I don’t want to pay I meant that if I get into top two colleges of my choice for instance and if one gives me a full ride I will go there. That’s what I meant. and thank you so much for all the replies. its really helping me.

and do you think I need to strengthen my extracurriculars? P.S. the activities that I do … I am going to continue them until I graduate from high school.

and of course not. I am not going to apply to med school from high school. I just want to make sure that they have a good med school after I graduate because I don’t want to switch school for grad.
