Should recommendations be from teachers in two different subjects? What if they're from the same subject but can write about you in two different lights (one for classroom/academic achievement, the other for extracurriculars/personal qualities)?

It depends on the school, for MIT they have parts of their application for the humanities teacher to evaluate you, and for your mathematics/science teacher to evaluate you.

I think it is more important to have two good recommendation letters. Especially if those two different aspects of your life would be highlighted. Go for the teachers in the same subjects.

I second embroglio - unless your colleges require recs from different subjects, go with the ones that you think will be best.
