I havent been able to build strong recommendations with any of my professors but I need a recommendation from at least one because i plan on transferring to NYU for fall 09. I feel helpless. Should I just go up to any teacher and ask them to write me one. Also how helpful will a recommendation from a previous manager at a previous job help for transferring?

Thank you

Hey Thomas,
You've got a couple options. Do you have any professor you know somewhat well? As in, they know you're a smart person? Well, you can ask them to write you a letter, and present them with a list of extracurriculars, as well as a basic outline of why you're transferring. This is what I did
"Hi Professor Blah, I was wondering if you would be able to write a recommendation for me for a transfer application to BLANK. I am hoping to transfer into BLANK because BLANK. I have attached a list of extracurricular activities, as well as more in depth reasons for my transfer to this email. If you have any more questions, please let me know. Thanks so much!"

Something like that. If you don't have anyone, don't feel helpless! Go with a manager's recommendation, especially if it was something you were good at. Schools are certainly concerned with your character and work ethic, and that would help!
Good luck!
