I am currently in Grade 12 giving my A levels.

I have given IGCSE (CIE) for the following subjects (with the scores which I have got):
Physics - A*
Chemistry - A*
Biology - A*
Mathematics - A*
Computer Studies - A
English as a second Language - B

I have studied Bengali and History from Grade 1 to Grade 7 and IGCSE Bengali, Accounting and Economics from Grade 8 to Grade 10 but I dropped them just three to 4 months before my final IGCSE exams.

They said "Two years of a foreign language", so does my taking of Bengali from grade 8 to Grade 10 count towards that ?

They also said "Two years of history and/or social sciences", so does my taking of History(from Grade 1 to Grade 7), Accounting and Economics count towards the recommendation ?

Do I meet the recommended high school preparation for MIT ?

If not please tell me what to do. It is possible for me to give IGCSE economics and Bengali within this June but it might give me a lot of stress because im also giving my A levels.

@ SA-07: This brings a question to my mind. How does they know whether the course you take is the hardest ones? For example, pure mathematics is the most difficult class in the view of most students, but it’s the easiest to me. On the contrary, Biology is the easiest course for the others, but I can’t really bear with the long list of biological terms. Please kindly define “hardest” here. Thanks.

No, I don’t think that you suffice for the high school requirements for MIT.

I second what the two posters have mentioned. Most students I’ve seen getting admitted to MIT take 9 or more GCE O Levels/IGCSE’s including Social Sciences Subjects and a minimum of 2 languages. You must need a rigorous high school record for admission, particularly at MIT. Your ‘B’ in English as a Second Language will hurt you a lot (at MIT as it is SUPER competitive) but it can be somewhat suppressed by a high score in the SAT. You haven’t mentioned your SAT scores yet.

Studying a subject at high school for two years or more does NOT meet the requirements for a British patterned education system because you need to complete that subject at O Levels/IGCSE and get the satisfactory grade.

It is silly to ask whether History from Grade 1 to 7 meets your high school requirement because ALL COLLEGES LOOK AT THE HIGH SCHOOL RECORD ONLY i.e. FROM GR 9-12

In most cases, GCE O Levels/IGCSE doesn’t matter a lot and GCE A Levels is what most adcoms take into account although you need to fulfill most of your requirements through IGCSE/GCE O Levels.

I don’t understand what you mean by taking Economics and Bengali in June :s Can you please elaborate.

There are two examination sessions for IGCSE (CIE). One in May/June and the other in October/November. So i meant that it is still possible for me to take IGCSE economics and bengali examinations in May/June 2010 session and get good scores(if i study hard offcourse).
Therefore takin these exams might be a little safe.

I m also taking TOEFL(since my native language is not english) in this March 13 and SAT II (Physics and Math level 1) after June. I might also take ACTor SAT(if it is required even after giving TOEFL).

If it is possible for you, I’d suggest taking up a social science subject at IGCSE level. I don’t know how your A-Level stress is (depends on the number of subjects you are taking). And you haven’t mentioned whether you’ve applied for the Class of 2014 or will be applying for the Class of 2015 (keeping in mind that you’re a high school senior and need to take an year off if I’m not mistaken)

Class of 2015 will obviously be more competitive than Class of 2014 (you have a lot of evidence from other threads here in CC) and therefore you have to be a great applicant (if MIT is of your choice). If your A-Levels complete in this summer, you should be able to do your social science subject (the one you choose) and your language (Bangali) later in this year when you have minimal A Level pressure.

Most international students apply to MIT with both SAT/ACT and SAT Subject tests and not one only. So to be competitive with them, you should take both tests. (And it would also help in showing that your English competence is high despite the B in IGCSE English which I have mentioned earlier also). I don’t know why I feel insecure with Math 1 (probably with bad range and less reputation) so in every ‘Math Test’ thread in CC, I recommend everyone to study for Math II instead of Math I (its another long story if I have to tell you why :p) Good Luck for your Mar 13 TOEFL test!

I haven’t applied to any universities yet. I will graduate from high school senior this summer. Then i might register for universities (as a international student) or else i will have to wait till next year when I will be in USA as a citizen, since I’m going to US. I guess there are more chances to get into a univ if u r a US citizen, so i might register only when i have become a US citizen next year.

So now i will take economics and bengali.

Currently in A levels im taking:
Physics
Chemistry
Mathematics
Further Pure Mathematics (only AS level)
Information communication Technology (only AS level)

And I was also thinking of the giving Maths level 2 instead of level 1.
