Recommended Science for Schools?

I wasn't sure where this would go so I figured here...?

I'm at a bit of a crossroads at this point. This year (junior), I have 2 ap courses. I wish I could have taken more but taking Journalism over the last 2 years precluded it.

I'm worried about the rigor of my courseload (only 2 aps but rest honors) so I wanted to take all APs senior year. Now normally, one would take Physics (honors or regular) senior year but naturally, I wanted to go for an AP science meaning AP Chemistry; AP Physics was not an option.

My science teacher told me however that competetive colleges look for a Physics course taken in HS and that its especially important if pursuing a major in science. I may potentially pick up a minor in Chem but right now, I'm not sure if I should go with the Honors Physics or the AP Chem. Any idea which looks better or which would be the better choice?

Which science classes have you already taken?

The rule of thumb, as I know it, is one year each of bio, chem, and physics, and then a fourth year of whatever you want. So if you've already taken physics, go for chem; if you haven't, that's the course you should be in.

You could double and take AP Chem and Physics; many here are doing that.....

It is a good idea to take physics, but I didn't, and I'm doing fine admissions-wise. I also applied to several accelerated med programs, but didn't realize that physics was "strongly recommended" as a prerequisite for each. I've gotten called back for interviews, so I guess it couldn't have been that crucial. Granted, I would have taken physics if I knew it was preferred, but I took other APs instead.

Most schools won't actually tell you what to take in science, but how many years of science to take. Which sciences to take can also really depend on the individual schools. A lot of colleges only ask you to indicate possible majors, and admit you on the basis of your overall credentials, giving you admission to the university, or a school within the college (ex. Arts and Sciences), not a specific major program. Check the colleges you may be applying to in order to see what they do.

Hmm, I haven't taken a physics yet but I dont have the space to double up in AP Chem and Physics honors. I guess then a Physics course would be better for me. I still have to do alot of "soul searching". Or online searching anyways; ill be sure to check college sites for recommended courses.

Thanks for the input!
