I was just notified that I was denied admission to UP and instead offered admission to Erie.
My stats:
GPA: 3.1
SAT: 1090
I applied to UP for Political Science and I said I’d do the summer session, but was still denied. Is there a way I can be reconsidered for UP at all?
I would say no. Poly Sci is not harder to get into than DUS and you’ve already been denied for summer session as well. A 3.1 and a 1090 SAT is not usually enough for main campus, even with summer session. You stats are solidly commonwealth campus material. Especially at this late date.
Someone had told me if I emailed them and asked to be consider again for UP + Summer with a less competitive major it could help. Is this true? If I applied African American studies or something like that, would my chances be increased?
It can happen. My friend got denied UP under biology and emailed to reapply for UP with immunology and infectious disease and got in a week later.
I’m so sorry, but I agree that UP probably won’t happen. I think your best bet is to secure a spot (and housing) at one of the larger branch campuses. With your stats, I would be very, very concerned that you would struggle at UP. I don’t want to rain on your parade, but there are kids with 3.55+ GPAs who get to UP and are barely getting by. I just read a post this evening whereas several freshmen at UP are having to late drop a basic 100 level psych course that is nothing more than a Gen Ed because they are likely to get a D or below. UP is really difficult and professors set the bar pretty high. Plus the classes are huge…200 to 300+ kids…which makes getting help and having questions answered even more challenging.
@ChristinaF What were your friends stats?
I am sure they were higher than a 3.1 to get into Immunology. Even though you WANT UP @corwinfire, I agree with @Sophley that it would likely benefit you greatly to start at a commonwealth campus. UP is tough. And tougher yet for students who had a B average in HS. I’ve given this advice to others, who didn’t listen, and not all of them are even IN college now…
I understand but I am upset how my friends with 3.0s and 3.3s got into main. One person I know got into DUS with a 3.0 and a 1100. I believe if I start at main I’ll have motivation and try my hardest.
What does African American Studies have to do with Poli Sci? If you want to get a degree in Political Science, it’s a good idea to enroll in a college that accepts you into that major.
