Hey, I got into penn state Harrisburg for the college of engendering but I really only wanted to go if i got into University Park. is there anyway I could try and get in there without doing the 2+2 program after my decision was already made? Should i email my state rep and ask to be reconsidered?
Can’t hurt. Probably won’t help unless your have some compelling new information or reason.
would changing my major to undecided change anything?
Harrisburg is a good branch campus. Did you visit? You might benefit to be in smaller classes and have more individualized attention.
UP is huge. You could also save some money possibly.
Why don’t you call admissions tomorrow and discuss these issues with them.
Unless you dad is the sate rep it will not help.
you think if i call or email ill have some what of a chance?
What are your stats, are your grades strong in math and physics?
What would be worse, barely getting in at UP and then get weeded out in engineering classes or start at a smaller school (branch) and do your best and if you are successful in the first 2 years, then transfer to main campus?
No chance at all. You do not have the stats to be admitted to UP. Political pressure is not going to help.
My math Sat was about a 670 and i had good math grades all throughout hs. I just don’t like the idea of kinda of switching schools 2 years through college
They probably expect 700 and higher for math score for engineering. Did you take AP calc in high school? AP physics?
You need to look at the end goal. I think you might be more successful in a smaller, more supportive environment.
I’m currently in honors calc rn
I looked on the other threads to see your stats. Your grades are good enough for UP…SAT might be a little low. My D got in for summer DUS last year with a 3.45 and a 28 ACT. They are NOT good enough to get into Engineering at UP.
Your option is to call admissions and see if they will reconsider you for DUS with the summer option. My D went in the summer and loved it. Going DUS does not hurt your engineering path whatsoever as you can take engineering classes as an undecided major. Many students do just this every year and get reconsidered. Some get in, some don’t depending on how much room there is. That is really your only option. Calling a state rep or anyone else other than admissions won’t help. They don’t care about recommendations or anything like that. PSU reconsiders students all of the time for different major/semester choices. I’d call, ask to be reconsidered for DUS fall, with summer option checked.
Good luck!
If I do this will my option to go to another branch be cancelled out?
There is an extra cost to start in summer, isn’t there, for tuition and housing? Isn’t that like $8,000?
And when do you start then, right after high school graduation?
Just some things to consider.
This is a 2015 brochure about LEAP, and cost of tuition (page 11) is $1,230 per credit for OOS students (6 to 7 credits are taken in the six week session), $691 per credit for PA student.

Then there is cost for room and meal plan, 2015 prices:
http://www.hfs.psu.edu/HFS/Rates/summer-2015.cfm#SummerSessionI2015
So that will add another $2,000 or so. This could cost well over $10,000 for a six week session for an OOS student!
@justins21 I don’t think so because your alternate campus would still be Harrisburg. But I’d ask them to be sure.
@mommdc yes, summer is another expense so it’s something to be considered. But it’s not wasted money in my opinion because they are taking classes that are general education classes so the credits count. I think we paid about 7k for summer session and she started on June 28, so about 3 weeks after graduation. Housing is for 6 weeks.
LEAP was an amazing experience for my daughter and summer in State College was awesome. I consider it money well spent, but I certainly understand that not everyone can or will want to do this. But for those kids for whom UP was their dream (my daughter) and who probably wouldn’t have gone to PSU otherwise, it’s a great option if you can afford it.
I was gunna wait till I get replies from other schools. Is that a bad idea. Should I do it ASAP?
Are you instate, OOS for PSU? Can your family comfortably afford PSU or are you going to need FA?
OOS and I’m going to need FA as i am paying for school
