Recruited Athletes?

In high school I throw shotput and discus on the the Track and Field team. At a few of the D3 schools I'm looking to apply to (JHU, MIT, etc.) I could make the team and perform relatively well, though I doubt I'd really compete for a medal (PR's - 36'4" Shot, 109'8" Disk).
I'm nowhere near an elite thrower, and I have yet to contact any of the Field coaches at the schools, but can I still be looked at as a recruited athlete?

Basically - Do you have to be a superstar athlete to be considered a recruited athlete, or just good enough to make the team?

For the sport I’m familiar with (tennis) you just have to be good enough to make the team. I’m not sure if it’s the same for other sports though. Also, at some DIII schools, being a recruited athlete for a “not-popular sport”, like track and field, doesn’t hold much weight in admissions.

Not to discourage you but…

Last year someone in my area my was recruited by Brown to throw. He was a 3-time defending state champ and threw the disk 184’3" and the shot 57’6"

^Already looked up the throwers stats at JHU and the lowest discus was in the low 90’s.
Plus, Brown is an Ivy League school, meaning it’s D1. I’m only interested in throwing at D3 schools.

and thanks for the replies. I wasn’t necessarily looking for it to be a hook like it would at a D1 school. I wanted to see whether I should bother going through the NCAA clearing house if I could only make the team as a “recruited athlete” (I’m not looking for scholarships/an admissions boost from track, just want to pursue it in college because I enjoy throwing, and I only have a years experience)

DagMlar,
How are your grades and test scores? Your first step would be to create some online profiles on internet recruiting sites and initiate profile sharing with some schools of your choice to see their interest level. If you can project your desire to work hard and improve, you may get some attention.

Note: Throws at the college level use heavier implements, a 16lb shot and 2K disc, so it is not an apples to apples comparison ;)

Some D1 Rugby schools want me to play but alas, no scholaships for Rugby
