Recruitment day?

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious if anyone could tell me what is the implication of a recruitment day invitation. I was invited to one by the department, does this mean I am accepted and I just need to wait to hear from the graduate school?

Also, what usually occurs on recruitment days? A lot of tough interviews by various faculty?

Thanks!!

Hi!

I believe that there is no distinction between "recruitment" and "interview." (If I'm wrong, please correct me!) The department will usually spend the majority of one day on interviews (Generally 4-6 profs, back to back) as well as tour of the schools, general information session, student life panel discussion, etc. Then usually on the following day, they will take you around town to show you where you will be living for the next 6ish years. Some schools though, notably BU Med and Tufts (for immunology at least) only do one day.

This is information I gathered from having gone to interviews and receiving interview itineraries. I am applying in life sciences, not sure if things would be different for non-science majors...

Also, I have learned that some schools invite fewer people with the intention of admitting almost everyone, while other schools invite more than twice the number of people that they have spots for, so that the chance of getting in is about 50/50. It all depends on how seletive they are and also how many interviewees they can accomodate.

The back-to-back interviews part sounds pretty daunting. I was hoping an invitation meant acceptance, but I guess I'm just day-dreaming, haha.

Thanks for your reply!

Hey random, np! :)

Seriously, the interviews are not bad at all, as long as you are well prepared. (Know your research experience inside and out!) People on this forum has said that it is sort of fun - I didn't believe them really, but as long as you're prepared, you WILL enjoy yourself. It is exciting and intellectually stimulating to talk to these bright people and show off how ready you are. Not to mention all the fancy meals and hotel rooms... :)

Once you get your first interview weekend over with, you'll totally agree! BEST of luck.

If you are in CS or Engineering it is definitely an accpetance and they just invite you to the visit day to convince you to accept their offer of admission. You will talk with the profs but it is just a friendly talk and the acceptance decision will do not change.

Congratulations on getting an invitation! I think things will look pretty favorable. If you don't have to pay for the visit, and it is somewhere far, I think the school is trying hard to entice you to come. You don't have to worry so much. Recruitment, by literal meaning, is mainly a chance for the school to impress you and convince you why it is a better school.

I'm going to a recruitment day for an engineering program I was accepted to. Should I dress up? It's 2 full days of tours, talks, and meeting with professors...

Dress nice, but there's no need for a tie/suit. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes since you'll probably be going all over the place during your visit.

Thanks for all the advice! Now I can't wait for the visit day! I guess it's time to do some shopping this weekend for nice clothes and shoes. :)
