Red Brick Housing

Housing stuff is coming up, and I hear it’s kinda competitive (everything at this school seems to be). I want to be sure about my choices. It seems there’s no complete profile of the houses anywhere. I got the app on my phone and watched the housing videos, where I learned some pretty good info about the dorms, like which were coed and how they’re organized. So here are some questions for people living in the red bricks:
How many RA’s are there in a building?
Is it possible to move the furniture around?
What’s up with the “no powerstrips” rule? How strict is that?
I heard also that the restrictions on food-appliances isn’t actually that strict. Can I bring a waffle iron, toaster, or rice cooker?
Is there a full kitchen anywhere in the buildings?
Is there a chance to party it up and get inebriated?
Is there anyplace to smoke something not necessarily legal in Cal Poly?
What do you do about having sex in the dorms? (I’m a chick, if that makes any difference)
What is the weather like? How warm does it get?
How warm are the dorms themselves? Is there heating or A/C?
Do you find you get along with your roommate better because you have a similar major?

-Redbricks have one RA per wing (or like 5/6 per building i think…) Sierra madre/yosemite have one per tower, and cerro vista usually has two per building.
-yes, you can rearrange the furniture however you want. This includes stacking the dresser drawer units in the apartments.
-i have no idea about the no powerstrips rule. never heard of it before I doubt they are very strict about it though. just like with anything, don’t be stupid.
-I’m pretty sure all those food appliances are allowed (in the apartments for sure at least) so you should be able to have them in the dorms too.
-The apartments come with full kitchens. The redbricks have a full kitchen in the dorm common area, but it is quite small. I think there is also a kitchen available for use in the towers as well.
-party it up? obviously…
-for smoking go up to the P
-are you a ■■■■■?
-weather is very nice. some rainy days, but generally sunny and between 60-75 degrees.
-As far as I know, none of the dorms have A/C. Cerro has a fan system that cools a bit, but not real well. All the dorms have heat. There is usually a heat wave that hits slo early in fall quarter turning most of the dorms into ovens. Other than that though, they are quite comfortable temperature wise.
-I actually find that I get along better with people in different majors. This may be because I am slightly self loathing, and also because most of the people in my major aren’t exactly the type of people I’m usually friends with. I think that if I were constantly around people who are in my college/major I would have an overload of too many liberal arts people and not be able to stand it. But that’s just me. There is definitely a plus of living with people with similar majors, especially when it comes to studying and making connections for the future.

Why would you ask if I’m a ■■■■■? I’m gonna have a roommate, and I don’t see how sex is gonna work out if she’s there a lot.

Oh ok, well sorry. I guess with that type of thing the best thing to do is to talk about it early and decide what you guys feel comfortable with so that it’s not awkward. Some people are uncomfortable with their roommates ever having anyone over. Most people though are ok with it though, so just make sure to set boundaries so that one of you doesn’t constantly have someone over making it impossible for the other person to ever be there lol. I doubt she’ll always be in the room. Most people like to get out and do things. However, if you are in the redbricks, or even the sierra madre/yosemite, there is a fairly good chance you will be in a triple. Which in the case of the redbricks at least, means the same amount of space but one more person. In the towers, they seemed to try and turn the larger rooms into the triples, since those rooms vary slightly in size.

I’m a current freshman living in the res halls so maybe I can answer some of your questions

-2 on each floor. One in each wing (half of the floor). In the towers there are two in each building (one on the 2nd and one on the 3rd floor).
-Yes you can move the furniture around. You can’t bring in your own furniture or use bed risers though.
-No powerstrips? I know there’s a rule against extension cords but I don’t think powerstrips are an issue. Even if they are against the rules, they’re very very lenient on that (obviously since I don’t know about this rule).
-Those appliances are technically not allowed, but it’s really easy to get away with having them in the res halls (they’re allowed if you stay in the apartments). They’re not allowed to look into your room without your permission except for during room checks during thanksgiving, winter, and spring break and even then they can’t look at anything that’s not in plain view. Don’t be stupid with the food appliances (same goes for alcohol, weed, etc.) and unplug/hide it during breaks and you should be fine. Oh and don’t set off any fire alarms because that’s embarrassing AF.
-There’s a small kitchen in each of the red brick buildings and one for all of the towers. It’s kinda sketchy, somewhat grimy, and small. It has everything you need to cook/bake though and you can check out pots/pans/etc. from the front desk if you don’t mind doing a little washing beforehand (college kids don’t know how to clean up after themselves). If anything, it’s MUCH nicer to make friends that live in PCV or Cerro and just go over to use their kitchens. There’s also a microwave on each floor so learn how to get resourceful with microwaves!
-Uh… this is college. Especially as a female, parties will not come as a problem for you. During WOW week pretty much everyone will be out wandering Hathway (the closest thing Cal Poly has to a “frat row”) and even after the party scene is pretty decent
-Hike up to the P. Architecture graveyard. Don’t worry about it. There’s no shortage of those places.
-Talk to your roommate and work out a system.
-I’m from SoCal so the weather is usually about a good 10 degrees cooler than it is down here. Mornings are cold, afternoons are usually nice and sunny, and evenings get chilly again. Dress in layers and strip as the day progresses, then start layering up again in the evening. Weathers usually nice most of the year. We get about a week of heat (90s-100s) and most of the classrooms are NOT air conditioned though so a small fan is really nice to have. and bring an umbrella because rain DOES happen every now and then.
-Dorms depend on your room. Some people have really stuffy rooms, some live by a draft, some are perfect. The Red Bricks are the only dorm with AC and all of them have heating. The AC in the Red Bricks are hit/miss though but heating usually works fine. AC isn’t needed most of the year except for maybe one week in the fall when it gets to the 90s.
-Me and my roommate have completely opposite majors and we’re incredibly close and get along really well. We met off our class’s facebook group page and found out that we have very similar habits and personalities. It really depends though. Sometimes it does suck that our majors are so different though (we can’t really take classes together or help each other on class work etc.) so I can see where it’d be nice to have a roommate with a similar major.

Thanks so much :)

re power strips: be careful with that. A power strip can serve to overload an electrical circuit, which is probably why extension cords/power strips are mentioned in the rules. When an electrical circuit is overloaded, it will trip the circuit breaker, or, if there isn’t a breaker or the breaker is malfunctioning or loaded with the wrong fuse, will arc and sometimes cause a fire.

Occasionally a rule or regulation makes sense!

Hey I lived in Muir my freshman year (one of the red bricks) so I can give a pretty good answer to this one.

There is one RA per wing, two per floor, and in total six per each red brick.

Is it possible to move the furniture around?- Oh yeah. Most of the people on my floor ended up with pretty damn creative room arrangements by the end of the year.

What’s up with the “no powerstrips” rule? How strict is that? There’s a powerstrip rule? If so I didn’t know it and I didn’t getting in trouble for having one.

I heard also that the restrictions on food-appliances isn’t actually that strict. Can I bring a waffle iron, toaster, or rice cooker?- Your not supposed to bring any of those things, but again most of the RA’s are pretty lenient and it’s rare to be busted for something like that. I know a couple of people who had rice cookers in their rooms.

Is there a full kitchen anywhere in the buildings? There is one kitchen per red brick with a stove, refrigerator, and all the tools you need to cook. The downside is that you have to get the key to use it and it can get pretty congested with so many people competing for the kitchen.

Is there a chance to party it up and get inebriated? Are you serious? I would go every weekend and if anything had too many opportunities to “party it up and get inebriated”. In Muir there were people who would stay in and people who would go out, it’s all a personal choice.

Is there anyplace to smoke something not necessarily legal in Cal Poly? Oh yeah, there are tons of places like the countless spots behind the dorms in the hills above campus. Such spots include a student made “bunker”, little hidden tree forts, rooftops of storage buildings, the Cal Poly P… and the list goes on. Just find your favorite spot on any of the hills and enjoy the breathtaking views of San Luis Obispo.

What do you do about having sex in the dorms? (I’m a chick, if that makes any difference)- At the start of the quarter I recommend getting to know your roommates schedule so you can plan around them knowing when they won’t be there. Unfortunately sometimes conflictions occur and being sexiled does happen. However, your a girl and typically the guys take the girls back to their dorms, not the other way around so I wouldn’t worry too much about it, that’s our (the guys) problem basically lol.

What is the weather like? How warm does it get? Amazing- not too hot but not too cold

How warm are the dorms themselves? Is there heating or A/C? The Red Bricks have AC and heating, some of the other dorms aren’t as lucky and only have heating.

Do you find you get along with your roommate better because you have a similar major? I personally wouldn’t really know the difference. Even if you do have a similar major as your roommate chances are slim that you will have a ton of classes with him/her. Although the Red Bricks are supposed to have designated major you will find all sorts of majors in each building. The only advantage to having similar majors I guess would be that you could study together. It’s really dependent on the person and not the major.

Mary Winchester, here are some answers to your questions re; rules in the dorms:

I just received my housing assignment at Cal Poly and I’m going into the Red Bricks. I bought a trunk from Campus Market in order to keep my valuables (laptop, wallet, ect.) safe. Am I able to move the dressers that are under the bed in order to make room for the trunk?

Yep
