When an athlete is red-shirted and that necessitates that s/he attend college during all or part of a 5th year, does the college completely foot the bill for this extension? Or would the school just continue to cover whatever portion of the tuition and room and board for the year they had been covering previously? In other words, does the athlete and/or parents have to finance another semester or full year? Does the financing arrangement differ depending on whether the red-shirting was due to injury or instead due to the coach's desire to retain the athlete for another year for the benefit of the team? Is a Div. 3 athlete as obligated to accept the conditions of red-shirting as a D 1 scholarship athlete?

Scholarships are for one year only - so if a student redshirts as a freshman, he/she isn’t even sure that they will be given a scholarship for the following year let alone a year in the future. The amounts of scholarships can also be changed from year to year - a athlete might get a 50% scholarship to entice them to come to the school, only to have it cut to 25% in the second year (or to zero).

I know three young men who were DI football recruits. All were redshirted, knew that coming in, all received 5 year full scholarships.

Know one female DI basketball player who wanted to major in nursing. She negotiated a five year scholarship since she wouldn’t be able to get her clinicals in while she was playing. This is her fifth year, she will not be playing and she still has a full-ride.

Of course bball and football must be full when playing DI.

I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules here. I know of a DI runner who redshirted due to injury, still graduated in 4 years, and was able to use his red shirt eligibility during a 5th year while he earned a master’s degree still receiving scholarship. A great use of that red shirt eligibility! My son on the other hand is at an Ivy - in that league red shirts are only used for injury and red shirt petitions are scrutinized carefully. S just learned this week that his red shirt petition for last spring (when he was injured) was granted. Of course it’s a different situation - given that there are no athletic scholarships from the Ivy’s there’s no “obligation” to use that red shirt eligibility. S would love to get to use that red shirted season, but it would be up to us to fund it.

Usually, an athlete who redshirts is given a fifth year on scholarship. And although athletic scholarships are year to year, most athletes can expect that their four or five year education will be covered unless they break team rules or otherwise get in trouble.
