how is reed's reputation??
my father's friend from reed keeps telling me to go to reed...

Reed's da bomb, I used to live down the road from it.

Hmmm. It's excellent. But, Reed is a bit unusual and quirky. Reed is very academic; its students rank at the top of "never stop studying." The academic payoff is high; Reed is in the top 10 of undergraduate institutions producing future PhDs in 16 academic disciplines, more than twice as many as any other college or university in the US.

just so you know as far us F'n US News goes... Reed refused to fully participate because they said that trying to rank schools with statistics is stupid (which it is)... and their ranking is relative to US News being a bunch of bitter bastards.

reed college is awesome! the academics are top notch and they have their own reactor, which students can work at after taking a class or something. it might not have the name of some other schools, but it does quite well in getting students into grad programs. the princeton review (i know, i know it's unscientific but surely it counts for something) rated it the #1 best academic experience for undergraduates. However, it's not for everyone, and the students have a reputation for being radical tree-hugging infrequently-showering types. But if you happen to be one of those people or enjoy their company, and you're willing to work your tail off, Reed is an excellent choice. I got in ED to another school, but Reed was definitely up there on my list.

oh yeah and ditto about the US news thing...Reed's ranking is absurd, just US news' petty attempt at revenge

Sorry, my PhD data is wrong. Reed is in the top ten for 16 disciplines, but I don't actually know the numbers for other schools. Reed's 16 are:

Anthropology, Area and Ethnic Studies, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, English Literature, Foreign Languages, History, Humanities, Linguistics, Math & Computer Sciences, Medical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Physics, Political Science, Sciences & Engineering, Social Sciences

I seriously considered Reed... but its a LONG way away from where I am so I ended up not applying. Hardcore academic for sure... which was kind of frighting... but it looks really sweet.

sounds like its great school acadenmically...

how about social life there??is academic so overwhelming that i can have free time??

Very solid academics without a doubt. Social life: Let's just say it can get better however, I have heard that it is worth the money you are paying to attend.

thanks for the reply man...
but still i dont like oregon....i dont know why...

is reed good in the field of engineering and physics? just curious

Preparation in physics is excellent; Reed is fifth in the country (behind CalTech, Harvey Mudd, MIT and NM Inst of Mining) in future physics PhD production. Reed has a cooperative engineering program with Oregon Graduate Institute of Science & Technology, also with excellect results, fourth in the country (behind CalTech, Harvey Mudd and MIT) in future PhD production.

Oh now I wish i applied, they invited me to their multicultural thing and everything.

how about reed's engineering? since i plan to double major in EE/physics

EDIT: oh sorri my bad... i dont think it offers engineering degree

Reed has an absolutely beautiful campus. A real gem. Portland is cool, too. My son would have gone there, even though it is a continent away, if he hadn't also gotten into Wesleyan. It is definitely worth checking out.

Oregon is an amazing state. Definitely one of the most scenic. I lived there for five years and I miss it like crazy. Portland is one of the best cities I have ever been to. Mt. Hood is fun and is great for skiing. And nothing (I mean NOTHING) beats windsurfing on the willamette river on a warm summer day!

anytime someone says that they go to Reed i am very impressed... moreso than berkeley or anything of the sort.

I think Reed is hypocritical with regard to US News rankings. I've heard it gladly participates with rankings other than US News.

It has a reputation of being incredibly intense and intellectual, with a lot of drug experimentation and a high drop out rate (more historically than in the present).

no Reed doesn't offer engineering- it is a liberal arts college and as such doesn't offer degrees in fields like business ( but has economics)education ( but has history) or engineering ( but has math & physics)
USNEWS does have a nice little article in this years college guide about Reed- that quotes "real people" because I know them!
