The National Merit Scholarship(NMS) was created in the 1950s by the U.S government to cover college tuition for the top students in the country. However, with rising costs of tuition, and a lack of corporate and college partners, the scholarship does not even cover full tuition for one year of college for many students. This conversation is mostly intended to be a thought experiment on increasing the NMS and possibly even expanding the scholarship to more students. Please be respectful and don’t attack other people’s views.
Where do you propose that NMCorp get the funds to increase its awards??
As it is, their awards are ONE TIME $2500 awards.
The bigger awards come from schools and corporations.
Well…there are colleges that awards NMS finalists full tuition. So…NMF couldn’t apply to those.
Sales tax. I know that there are corporate and school sponsors but I think that the Fed could cover more. I propose 20,000 for each nms finalist. It should cost around 20 million altogther. 1000 times 20,000.
I think the more whining there is about NM the more likely is it will just go away. Perhaps it is obsolete, rather than “unfair” or “insufficient”.
Do you need money for college? The best aid comes from colleges. Since you’re a high school freshman, you have plenty of time to prep for standardized tests. If you take rigorous classes and keep your grades up, you may qualify for merit aid.

???
Sales tax is a state and local tax, not a Fed tax.
NMCorp isn’t a govt agency. State gov’ts aren’t going to be giving NMCorp their sales tax income.

Would this be a one time award? Or 4 year award?
1000?
There are 15,000 NMFs announced each year. During any 4 year period ,there would be about 60,000 active NMFs.
According to Wikipedia, National Merit Scholarship Corporation is privately funded, not US Government funded. I can’t find any mention of government funding on nationalmerit.org either.
The Feds do not fund National Merit scholarships at all.

This.
Sorry, I see no likelihood of an increase in NMF awards, since as you have noticed getting corporate sponsors is getting increasingly difficult. In any case, different Us do offer varying amounts of awards, from $0 to full tuition and more, with lots of data points in between.
As others have pointed out above, College Board which administers NMF is a private org and has no ability to tax anyone or anything.
Ya. For some reason, I thought that the government paid 2500 to each student and there were only a 1000 finalists. I already knew about the corporate sponsors. About sales tax, the feds have established sales tax on on gasoline and cigarettes, according to Wikipedia (know it’s not reliable but was too lazy to research on other sites).
Fro some reason, I also thought it was a public corporation (similar to AmTrak).
Ya I get the point. It’s almost impossible to cover 15,000 students.
So you want others to research for you…
Look, I’m really sorry, and I would like to apologize for not researching this before. I really thought that there were only 2500 semifinalists and 1000 finalists.
But I did research sales tax
