regarding asians in the admission pool..

I pretty much agree with everyone here that AA works against Asians. But I'm wondering, do the colleges treat Asians as one whole ethnic group? I mean, most Asian Americans (probably > 80%) seem to be either Chinese or Korean. So do people from Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. suffer the same fate in the admission process?

i dont think so, i seem to recall someone talking about how a certain asian sub group was still getting aa because they were underrepresented, but then again, isnt there just one box for all asians? unless you specify it under other or something, how do they even know?

Well usually next to the checkbox there's a line where you specify your country of origin.

Espenshade found that African Americans and athletes enjoy the most significant bonus in admissions. Using the S.A.T.’s 1600-point scale as a measurement, Espenshade found that being black is worth roughly 230 extra points, while being a recruited athlete is worth 200 points. Hispanic applicants get an average bonus of about 185 points, and legacy status translates to 160 points. *Asian applicants are at a disadvantage, comparable to a loss of 50 points. *

found this on princetons alumni website - very depressing!

thats so sad!!!i better start working on my times.

ummm i wish i were black :(

thats drastic.

Check out this recent editorial from the Daily Princetonian: http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/archives/2004/11/29/opinion/11584.shtml

wow... good info

Hmm that is indeed depressing. However, I'd expect that being Asian hurts only if you're one of the major immigrant Asian ethnic groups (Chinese/Korean/Indian). Therefore I'm guessing that this loss of 50 points is just a weighted average for all the Asian ethnicities, possibly including ones that would not face any disadvantage whatsoever. Or do colleges treat all Asians the same?

Another question: why would being a recruited athlete be worth a finite number of points? I thought that as long as you have not failed classes, not committed some grave crime, or done anything to that effect, being recruited guarantees you admission. Or is recruitment not as decisive a factor as I think?

I read the Espenshade's findings in the Princeton Alumni Weekly, and I believe it said that Princeton was not included in the study because they don't use points. Also, I highly doubt that colleges factor in your ethnicity. They don't care if one is from Africa or is African American, or if one is from Peru or Argentina, so I highly doubt they care if one is cambodian or korean. Is there a general consensus that a white student would be chosen over an identical(besides the skin color of course) asian one? (Sorry for the complete run-on above)
