Hello Everyone! I have a question concerning the PLME program at Brown. Can you double space on the personal statement and the two PLME essays? Also, what font is acceptable?

I really appreciate your feedback!

I really appreciate your feedback!

I don’t think they specify, but on my application I double-spaced and used a normal Times New Roman 12pt. font. I would recommend doing that so it’s easy for them to read it.

Wayne,

I do not mean to question your early start, but the application for next year has not yet been released, and will not be released til August… The questions may change next year.

I think the most important concern I would have is that it is too early to be working on your college admissions essays. You should enjoy your junior year and the beginning of your senior year. ALso, So much happens between the end of junior year and November/January 1st. You may come back and realize your essay has completely changed. I’d wait at least til the application is available to begin work.

I agree with floatingriver.

In response to your question though, I got into PLME this year and I did not double space my essays. I wrote in size 11 Times New Roman-- size 11 is acceptable for any college stuff unless otherwise specified.

Feel free to ask me anything else about the PLME application process and good luck!

Hey Dextermorgan, have you officially committed to PLME as well? I did a couple weeks ago and was just wondering haha. Not to mention, it’s pretty cool your username pays homage to one of the greatest shows in existence.

Ok I appreciate the advice but I really doubt they are going to change the question mid-stream. The question are to traditional and I just want to start early so if I’ll have a base. If I have any new things I will change as according to my likes and dislikes. Again, I honestly appreciate your incite very much. Thank You!! so what about 12 font double space is ok? for personal statement and 2 plme essays?

I feel bad about pseudo-hijacking your thread Wayne, so I’ll offer some insight. I got into PLME and I used 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, and single spacing.

Unlike the other posters that have said don’t worry about your essays now, I’m going to disagree and say if you would like to start early (you don’t have to, but if you really want to), it can’t hurt. I am one of those people that started their essays a few days before the Jan 1st deadline and finished maybe literally 30 minutes before it. While I liked them in retrospect, this was extraordinarily stressful and I saw a few weak areas of my essays that I could have otherwise improved. While it may be too early to start your essays now (especially when you have a whole summer of experiences awaiting you), thinking about them at least shows your enthusiasm regarding this program. Just be ready to dramatically change your essays if the essay prompts are different when the application comes out or if you discover something better to talk about later on.

That being said, I would highly advise you NOT to start now if you are the type that tries to finish things early and would be hesitant to go back and tweak or even start over if anything changes. If you are not going to be open to reworking your essay later on, do it later, not now. Otherwise, I can’t see the harm and though starting this early may not help too significantly, it really isn’t my responsibility to tell you how to live your life.

The font and spacing WILL NOT MATTER. Mine were double spaced, and I got in. I’m sure some single-spaced ones got in as well. What they’re looking for are thoughtful responses.

Also, about starting this early. You can definitely get a start. But remember to edit later - your experiences over the next 6 months are definitely going to change what you’re writing.
