Registering for housing by March 15

Is it better to register for housing at CU Boulder by March 15 to be included in the first wave of housing selections or wait to see how UC reach schools pan out? Feeling that UC’s will reject and CU is S favorite anyway.

Also, what dorms on campus are recommended for a S who is social and prefers being in the thick of things? Also, prefers a dorm for mixed majors and eats a ton of food so food needs to be convenient location.

If you don’t mind losing the deposit if S gets into UC then go ahead and put it down ASAP. The center of campus around Farand field is where he will want to be from your description of him. Baker, Libby, Farand or Cheyenne Arapahoe are the dorms and they fill up first. Most late depositors will end up in Williams Village. Farand is closest to the C4C for food and has a fresh food market in it. Farand should be his top choice, it will have arts and sciences, and pre engineering crowd but also several of the other majors.

Thanks, Good advice.

So if we register for housing I assume we have to commit to the school. Does this in any way impact other applications that are pending for other schools? I don’t want my daughter to miss out on good housing options but CU is not her first choice. Also- how much is the deposit and if we are past the 3/15 deadline mentioned above does it make sense to still submit housing requests asap?

^^^ I would also love to know if anyone has advice on this issue. I tried to get my son to accept admission and apply for the good housing, but he did not want to commit until he had all his decisions in. I also feel bad committing then pulling out later if he decides to go elsewhere, but Boulder seems like a good option for him.

@redwoodcity You can’t apply for housing unless you commit. I think it was only $200 to secure your spot when we checked.

@redwoodcity @stardustmom My son first accepted at CU Boulder paid $200 to accept then it said he needed to wait 3-4 days until you are eligible to apply to housing. Once you fill out the housing form you pay $300. I noticed there were phases of housing and the first phase ended March 15th. Students who applied for housing by March 15th get first choice. The second phase is March 16-30th so they get second choice. March 31-April 13, then another phase April 14-May 4, then last is May 5th or later. I read that if you decide to cancel the housing for any reason it can be refunded if done by a certain date, I can’t remember that date. Personally, my son was 99% certain he wanted to go to Boulder but I was curious how it would pan out for UC and Cal State Schools. He would rather get the best choice of housing at Boulder and be on central campus instead of being at the housing off campus.

@stc9991 so if we accept at CU Boulder does that prevent from accepting a spot at another school too? My daughter is still debating but I don’t want her to be out of luck housing wise if she opts to go to Boulder. I am ok paying the 200/300 dollar fees and forfeiting if she changes her preference.

I would say that Farrand, Baker and then Sewell are the best dorms. Farrand is really nice because its right by the field, close to the C4C and not far from any academic building or rec center. Sewell is pretty great because it has its own dining hall, it is not as not as central but very near the rec center which is a plus.

As far as people talking about committing or not, I would say to do so ASAP. From what I’ve heard, this year will be the largest and most qualified incoming freshman class ever, especially in engineering. Many of the top tier talent admits will matriculate this year and will take those dorms as quick as they can.

@redwoodcity If you don’t mind forfeiting the $200 to accept then I would accept. The $300 housing fee is refundable prior to a certain date in writing. I cannot remember the date. I’ve heard plenty of people who accept and then back out. As @spike22 explains, the good dorms will go quick. All the schools accept far more than they can actually handle so they understand the difficult decisions we’re making.

You can get the $300 refund if you contact housing by May 15.
