I’m already registered to vote where I live in Florida and I’m going to college in-state, but my college is 4 hours away from home. Also, because the county where I live now is extremely loyal to the party I like, it makes more sense for me as a voter to want to register where my campus is so:

I don’t have to vote absentee

My vote will “count” more in state and federal house/senate elections. (My college is in a swing area of the state.)

So basically I am trying to find out how to reregister using my dorm as my residence (Which is legal in all 50 states). For the address, do I use the university’s address and then use my building code and dorm number as the apartment number on the application? (The apartment number would look like this: “KDO2-934C” Needless to say, this does not fit in the small “apartment number” box.) If I change the address, does this mean I have to change it on my driver’s license too? That would be strange, because it would be the university’s address. Thanks for the help.

I know it’s legal. My dad even voted where his college was in Florida back in the late 70s and early 80s. I’m just very puzzled how to do it.

Hey, I was "sort of" in your position this past year. I'm from Florida, but I go to an out-of-state school. I had to change my registration from FL to my school's district, and I'm sure you can do an in-state change just as well. I was at some street fair when I saw and talked to the regional Democratic party club (thingy-majig). I'm sure, whatever your affiliation (assuming you're affiliated), that the party will have a local office you can contact and they'll help you out/get you the proper forms. Then they mail you your registration!

Or if you can't find them, I'm SURE the Obama people will be in full force and willing to help you get registered on campus. They were in full force back around primaries (mine was in May), and by the 200th time of being asked if I was registered to vote, I was getting REALLY, REALLY annoyed.

Thanks. I'm going to UCF, so I looked at the representatives for that district, and it seems my vote would be much more valuable there. Judging from my orientation last month, the Obama people are in full force there as well. They had a table set up outside the student union every day I was there so far.

I was in a similar situation last year, living in Broward County but wanting to vote while I was at school at Florida State. They provided very good training for volunteers for the many voter registration drives.

For an on-campus dorm, you list the dorm name (such as Ragans Hall) and then list your room number for the apartment box. You would just do this on the standard florida voter registration form, being sure to select the "change of address" box. You can fill out this form and mail it in, or you can wait until you get to campus because it is likely groups will be organized to register students and they will take care of mailing it in for you.

Don't forget that the books close 29 days before the election - so unless you have the change postmarked by today, you will still be registered in Broward for the August primaries (but if you're home, you can take advantage of early voting to vote before you leave for school). The deadline for the november election is october 6th.

I'm not sending it in today. I plan on going to vote early before I leave for UCF to vote in the primaries. It's kinda cool actually. Because the Democrats always win in Broward County (pretty much) it's almost like I get to vote twice through the democratic primaries in Broward and the general election in Orange, but legally. :)
