Ok, just gotta tell a story here. A friend of ours (who is actually pretty good on most house projects) retired earlier than his wife and started a kitchen rehab project. He decided to install (or refinish?) wood floors in kitchen but had a devil of a time getting things leveled correctly in a house with some settling. There was a time when wife lamented stepping across beams to cook dinner. Once perfect in kitchen, he had to set forth on more flooring projects in the other first floor rooms to get everything aligned right room-to-room.
@mathmom that sounds lovely. When we move to Florida I’m planning on a little 2 bedroom place that’s easy to take care of AND it’s gonna be quirky and fun. Turquoise sink sounds like it would fit right in with my “rest of my life” home
For now I have to be boring and neutral to try and sell.
@Colorado_mom my husband is very handy…but I don’t let him do big projects like this. He could do them…but his timeline is very very slow. I hire folks when I want the job done in a timely fashion!
I hired someone to refinish our hardwood floors. I will hire someone this winter to replace the carpet upstairs, and I will hire someone to do new tile in the entryway, powder room and mudroom.
Oh I totally hear you, Colorado_mom! Hub has high, high standards. Which means an extended timeline. He’s already installing the cabinets. I put my foot down and said pros for counter and backsplash. He & I did lux vinyl floor in another rehab - not really too hard (he did the corner cuts and tricky stuff).
I’ve heard tales from my guy friends about the excruciating work involved in floor tile, tho…!
An Instagram person I follow posted today that this LVP company has all samples on sale this week for $1/piece (see the little banner near the top of their webpage). For those thinking about LVP maybe an opportunity.
The Instagram person also says you can use the code B1G1 to get buy one, get one free as well? So 2 samples for $1! The regular price is $3-$5 per sample. Shipping is free.
(I’m just the messenger, know nothing about the company but thought of this thread when I saw this!)
Thanks, abasket!!!
Thanks to all for the wonderful ideas, input, & help!
We decided (after much angst & debate, lol) to run the wood-look lux vinyl through most of the first floor - including the kitchen, even though it abuts the family room with its lovely, real white oak.
Spoke to our favorite designer via FaceTime and she thought the two materials were close enough that it wouldn’t look like “nice try but not quite” (which is what I wanted to avoid). I am trusting her design acumen! Here is a pic of the two materials (ha if they don’t look good together, perhaps don’t mention? LOL).
I think that looks like a great match!
I think it looks great.
Thanks so much, socalmom007 and thumper1! I know I’ve put a lot of thinking (posting, ha!) into this.
It’s in large part because we are roughly planning to sell and downsize in a few years and the sale of this property will be funding the next purchase. So feel like there’s a lot riding on making the right decision that future buyers will like (and we really like). I see it as, in part, delineating the niceness of our future house! (maybe overthinking ).
It looks really nice.
One thing I am REALLY good at is overthinking . Making decisions about house stuff is sheer torture for me. Just picking a paint color was
Definitely not to my decorative taste…
Looks like you got a good match there.
Looks really good. I like the different plank size.
That seems like a good decision. Best of luck with the project!
Great color match, at least on my screen! Go for it. If you sell, the new owners can do what pleases them.
Thanks so much!! Got a lot of great ideas here, and appreciate it!!
We have dark floors and they look great, but they do show a lot of dust, especially in sunlight. And of course we have two cats and you can see the fur on the floor. We are getting a roomba vacuum and I hope that helps. It will supplement our normal floor cleaning routine.
We have also had light floors and while nice, they also show the dirt and it felt like we were constantly cleaning them to keep them from looking grungy.
That said, we are a no shoes in the house family and I think that’s helped keep our floors much cleaner then they’d be otherwise.
I think the best flooring we’ve had is those Mexican tiles…those were the best! They were so resilient. They did look dated, but oh well!
+1 to using a robot vacuum regularly on wood floors to keep the debris (pet hair, this time of year-tree needles, crumbs, dust bunnies) under control.
I love a terracotta tile. So durable and they hide everything.
I think those tiles are a classic look, even if they were kind of trendy a while back. Kind of how white kitchen cabinets or white tile will never go out of style even if those are trendy and overdone lately.
