Reject from Grinnell and next steps

Thanks for your good wishes. We will need them.

That is too far into future! We will certainly give strong preference to undergraduate research in choosing the school beyond that how things move only time will tell.

I’d like to throw out another school which will check many of your child’s boxes: New Mexico Tech.

Tech is small school (3,000 students) in a warm climate, with plentiful undergrad research opportunities and a strong reputation with grad schools.

2022 National Science Foundation Rankings

  • New Mexico Tech ranks 18th among the top 50 Universities that produce PhD students
  • New Mexico Tech is ranked No. 6 in the nation among all Physical Science and Earth Science universities
  • No. 1 among all public universities for the
percentage of bachelor’s students who later complete a Ph.D.

COA for OOS state (and international) students is ~$40k/year–higher than your budget, but your child may be eligible for merit scholarships that range from $2K - $6k/year. Additionally your child can apply for the competitive scholarship program which gives an OOS tuition remissions which lowers the COA to $27K/year. The competitive scholarship can be stacked with additional GPA-based merit awards.

Deadline for admission and scholarship applications is March 1.

Tech doe NOT use the Common App, but has its own on-line application here: Undergraduate Admission

Wow! They seem to be really top notch. At this stage I think we will wait till @15th Jan to see where we are and then decide if we should do a few more. Thanks for indicating this amazing school!

Please circle back with a “results” post - accepted, deferred, declined, aid, etc. It will be helpful for other international families.

Best of luck to you!
