Some of my quick stats... But since I got flat out rejected by Columbia should I bother applying to Harv, Yale, Princeton???

Columbia was nuts this year and everyone knows the ivies are a crapshoot.
Based on your stats, you have a decent chance of admission anywhere, don’t give up just yet.

What was your course load? How did your interview go?
I would say apply to other Ivies. Your stats are excellent but it’s a crap shoot at any Ivy. Still it is worth it. You might get into one of them.

I also got rejected, and I shall apply to other Ivys.

dubfault - as i have been trying to explain, there are tons of reasons you could have been rejected.

you could’ve been rejected simply for having a bad YCU. or because you applied for an overrepresented major and didn’t impress in that pile. or because comparatively you were not strong from your own high school.

supposing you work on your application and minimize issues for other schools, this is entirely possible that you could be admitted by HYP with your stats, as well as other ivies.

my biggest thought would be from columbia’s perspective would be - what major were you interested in, what books did you put down on columbia’s books question.

what’s ycu??

I know there are many reasons admissions geek and its a waste of time going through all the reasons in my head as to why I got rejected… but what is a YCU?

I know you’re sad from being rejected, but don’t lose hope and act like you are a failure. Because you aren’t.

So just learn to move on and stop moping, and start applying to other ivies. They’re not the same exact thing: If you don’t get into one, who says you can’t get into another?

It’s worth a try. Maybe you’ll go into the ivies after all.

And don’t bash on Columbia just because you didn’t get in.

And I’ve broken the record at my school for the number of AP’S anyone has taken their junior year. So courseload definitely isn’t it lol… I definitely think it’s my school. There are kids that have gotten perfect SAT scores at my school and great GPAs… and its hard as hell but I htink our counselors and teahcers don’t really care about recommendations so its unheard of to get into an ivy league from my school unless its sports recruit

Ligers,I actualy was happy I got rejected from Columbia. I like that I have other options now that I could have missed out on so I’m definitely not moping around… BUt my mentality right now is if I didn’t even get deferred from Columbia, what are the chances that I’d even get accepted by the HYP schools>?

ycu - why columbia university.

bad recs certainly are potential problems, a private school, with 440 graduating students? it seems a bit large.

anyhow, if you want to talk more candid, feel free to PM me.

your grades, coursework, sats means you are ivy eligible. it is the rest of your app that must work well. it also means that the fact you weren’t even deferred with that profile suggests to me that there was a big red flag in your application somewhere, and you probably need to figure out what that was before you submit future applications.

that red flag could be columbia specific - not being a good match. or it could be a bad LOR or a particularly arrogant essay, things you should figure out before submitting future apps. based on your profile, you’re a very good student and the kind of student columbia probably would defer. if it is columbia specific, that is fine, easy to correct with your supplements to the other schools, if it is bigger - well this is the time to start digging deep into your soul.

i should say: i tend to be skeptical of self-reporting stats. there is something you’re not telling us, and whether you want to or not, for your own sake, you should figure that out.

self-reporting stats?? I’m definitely telling you everything in a quick take.

Whats LOR?

And can I PM you my essay? Cause as youre saying, I do need that red flag figured out if you can help me out with it.

letter of recommendation. pm me the essay, sure.

I think you have good stats, certainly Ivy-worthy, and am rather surprised that you did not get into Columbia…I agree with admissionsgeek, there has to be something off, maybe with your essays? If so you should look them over and if you see anything off, you can revise them for your other colleges. Or a problem with the letter of rec…do you know the teachers you asked for a recommendation well?

Yeah my recommenders were good. One of them for sure should have been good. He was my AP Bio teacher last year (1st time teaching the class) and I was one of the only kdis to get a 5 on the exam. He was also my varsity track coach for 2 years out of the 4. And the other was my Spanish teacher. She’s kinda nuts but in a good way so that should have been good.

My essay is pretty neutral. There’s nothing in it that could throw the reader off in my opinion and I’ve had many people read it and they all get pretty much the same positive impression. But who knwos who got my essay…? If you’d like to see it let me know

I see, that’s weird…then it shouldn’t be a prob with the letter of rec. But sure I’ll like to see your essay, PM it to me.

Alright… sent! Thanks so much guys

Many happy students at all the elite schools (including each of the Ivy League schools) were rejected by Columbia. Don’t alter your application strategy based on a deferral or rejection from Columbia (assuming your strategy is realistic).

admissionsgeek: Just wondering: What kind of books should be on that list?

Weird. I would have thought you’d get in or at least deferred. You beat my stats. I think you are definitely going to get into a top 10 school just don’t give up.
