Don’t deposit at a school you cannot pay for.
You don’t have to deposit before May 1st if you think you might be able to get another choice in the next couple weeks. Deposits are usually nonrefundable.

I think you take a positive approach in your letters of introduction. Don’t feel you have to say “I chose the wrong schools to apply to” or “I didn’t get in…”. Try something that shows you in the driver seat but helps them know you didn’t get kicked out of have some bad experience as someone else noted above. Try something like “I have decided to broaden my search for a school …which is a better fit” or “that meets my needs” or “that meets more of my needs” or “which offers areas of study I had not previously prioritized” or “which better fits my budget” or just simply “I decided to go in a different direction with my college search”. Those all have you in the driver seat and eliminate the need to make excuses.
New Paltz accepted me! Now I just have to apply for the honors program. Big thanks to everyone that put their 2 cents
Congratulations! Actually, if the school is more affordable is a bigger question.
Good luck.
So glad for you! Every year New Paltz seems to get more selective. Lots of building going on, lots of growth. The town has gotten more developed but still maintains a funky artistic progressive village identity (in a gorgeous country setting). I hope you do get into the honors program, but even if you don’t (I say this because of deadlines) you can still seek out professors, stand out in your classes, etc. WIshing you all the best.
Yay! Such a cool place. I hope it works out!
Congratulations!
The Excelsior provides, at most, $6k/year for tuition only. SUNYs cost ~$20k/year, so unless OP commutes New Paltz won’t be free. It’s an excellent school, though, and it seems more difficult to get into every year.
@artloversplus It will be affordable since I’m eligible for a lot of state grants
Thanks for the clarification, OP. That is music in the ear. With best wishes and hoping you report here frequently about the progress in your academic career.
Another happy ending! Hooray!
