Rejected from UT Austin thread

It’s been a few years since my son was accepted as an OOS student with high stats, but FWIW, the lady in the engineering school laughed politely when I asked her if there was a chance my son could get a tuition waiver. She said they only had 7 or 8 TOTAL waivers, for students of any level! My son had some UT connections, too, because of my dad. Oh, well!

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Sounds like a real tight numbers game at Austin for OOS candidates. Really good candidates not getting in. If we do go we will at least try to get some Austin barbecue.

Off-topic but if you are interested in Austin BBQ you have to try Franklins, but word of caution customers line up about 3 hours before it evens opens and they normally sell out very quickly. Bon Appetite magazine named it the best BBQ in the country. Try the beef brisket its to die for …

Salt Lick and Franklins are both fantastic! @fatherof2boys‌

My son was rejected from 1st choice McCombs, 2nd choice Liberal Arts/Economics, top 9% 6A competitive HS; 28 ACT. Varsity FB, BB, NHS, FCA, 100+ service hours. We are in-state so he was offered CAP, but will go to A&M instead as was accepted to Engineering there. His dream has always been UT, but he doesn’t want to work his way in. Texas’ loss is A&M’s gain, IMO!

@DWitmer‌ McCombs was crazy this year, it was like they stopped caring about rank and admitted people by test scores or something, although I’m still shocked by the kid in my grade who had a 34% rank and got in.

Saltlick is highly overrated. It’s not bad, but it’s definitely not the best or great by any means.

We might end up moving to TX anyway in 2016, we like the area north of San Antonio International. Salt Lick and Franklin’s will be on our to do list on some Austin weekend trips (with the kid or without!)

Agree with some of the other posters, A & M seems like a great alternative to UT for both in-state and OOS engineering candidates looking for a good engineering school that also provides the full big college experience.

Question - does every acceptance letter encourage the student to go somewhere else one year and reapply to UT Austin? Ive never seen that angle before in a rejection letter. They really encourage the transfer. Why not just admit the student?

@impress369‌
Do you mean every “rejection letter”?

Yes, the rejection letter clearly states to go somewhere else, do really well, and then reapply. They even give a website for more information. I was surprised. Good marketing on their part, IMO.

yes, I meant rejection letter. :blush: My Bad!

Hello @fatherof2boys Could you possibly direct me to the admission formula info you referenced in your post? I would appreciate it greatly.

you sound like my compsci god teach Ross Russell who is amazing at csgo and battlefield. Lol off topic too @fatherof2boys

@fatherof2boys @Alfonsia Just to comment on the “admission rigour isn’t applied across the board” concern, College of FIne Arts has additional admission requirements beyond test scores, GPA, and extracurricular activities. Many of the majors in COFA (such as BFA programs) also require an interview in addition to portfolios and/or live auditions. So, I can assure you that there is rigor and high standards across our board, they just look different.
