Rejected Pool's Stats, Theories, and Appeals.

Hey guys, it pains me to have to be writing this, but I figured that someone had to. Today I was rejected from UCLA as a psych major.

Stats:

Major: Psych
GPA: 3.74
Prereqs: 1 IP
IGETC done
EC's/Essays: I thought they were good actually.

Demonstrated Interest: 8 Psych classes....

Theory:

I wrote that I was planning on taking 3 philosophy courses at Berkeley over the summer on my app. Maybe UCLA was upset that I had shown more interest to UCB or something.

Appeal: Yes.

Help. lol. I don't know the first thing about appeals. I write a letter, correct? Also, do I include letters of rec?

I'm hoping to write one hell of an appeal.

Congratulations to everyone that has been admitted!

Your grade seems fine… it could be your essay that might been the deciding the factor… care to let me read it over?

@ edbraga: I would love that. Please critique as you see fit; don’t go easy on me.

PM or e-mail??

pm is cool

Arright guys…obviously I’m pretty bummed that I got rejected for Business Econ…Do you guys think I should try to appeal for econ? I have all the prereqs done for that major as well.

Stats:

REJECTED

Current School: UC Irvine

Current Major: Business Economics

Applied Major: Business Economics @ UCLA (I was a UC-UC transfer applicant)

GPA: 3.933

Extra Curricular Activities: UCI Entrepreneur Society Active Member since Fall '08,
Currently Participating in SCORE (Counselor’s to America’s Small Business) workshops with certificate upon completion. Dean’s Honor’s list all quarters. I’ve done Extensive Volunteer-work throughout High School (They allowed you to list this on the application, but I don’t know how much they care about it)

Work: Internet Marketing and Sales position at a Small Business for ~4.2 years (2006-present, 12 hours a week)…grew the business by over 30% in terms of profits.

Prereqs: All Done.

Essays: 8-9/10

So yeah, do you think I still might have a chance??

(Note: I didn’t apply with an alternate major)

Emilsinclair9, this is stunning to me dude! I can’t believe you were rejected with all of your statistics, EC’s, and EIGHT psychology classes!

I can look at your essay you wrote for them if you want. It is quite obvious that your writing skills are above average (to say the least) when compared to the typical transfer applicant. This stinks man, sorry to hear! Were your parents a bit shocked?

If extreme bad luck befalls you (meaning Cal too) would you then decide on UCSD, lol? Not that I think Cal should deny you–I think they will appreciate and honor the 3 summer classes you took on their campus.

@Emil I’m sorry man. PM me your essay if you want me to go over it, I’m a self-proclaimed pro at critiquing essays haha.

emilsinclair9, you still have a good shot despite the rejection from LA. Your application is tailored towards Cal anyway, keep your chin up. They most def gonna take the 8 pysch class into account.

Here’s a personal anecdote:
I told a former UCLA admissions officer to look over my app and she said my app needed some work.

I gave the same app to a Cal Rep and she said my app was solid
(my app was gear towards Cal)

The point is, Cal and UCLA have different criteria they’re looking for. So you might be strong for one school and weak for the other. Don’t think just because UCLA rejected you, Cal will reject you too. Good luck and if things don’t work out, you can always appeal.

I’d be happy to look over anyone’s personal statements too. I used to read tons because I was on the alumni scholarship committee in hs. Still, it would be interesting to read those of a fellow transfer student! just pm me, you guys  and good luck with your appeals.

Emil, you mentioned you petitioned successfully for academic renewal right? When were those grades changed? Also, did you have TAP? The next thing is, knowing the strength of the applicant pool, as unfair as this may seem, having that one pre-req in progress probably hurt you. Lastly, I really don’t think the EC and essays matter as much for transfers as they do for freshman applicants. My theory is that it was the 1 IP pre-req, which sucks.

@emil hey man, that’s the spirit! I’m glad to hear you’re going to appeal this decision  Would you still appeal if you get into Berkeley 6 days from now?

Overall, I agree with you about the reason they rejected you. They may have felt that your heart was already set on Cal (or why wouldn’t you be taking UCLA classes this summer?).

Good luck man! Hope to see you around

^ There’s no way that’s correct, Politricks. Plenty of people get in with pre-reqs in progress. It’s unrealistic to think that they expect you to finish ALL of your IGETC and pre-reqs in 3 semesters and have nothing to do in Spring 2010, especially when IGETC and pre-reqs are designed with 4 semesters in mind.

also, isn’t psych super competitive at ucla? the fact that your gpa isn’t above that “magical” 3.8 might have hurt you a little, don’t you think?

Bottomline…you applied to a severely impacted major. I think if you had TAP and had an alternate major you would have been in. I am pretty sure you will get into Berk. Philosophy is WAY less impacted. I wish you all the best, emil. I hope that you get into Berk and kick a$$!!!

WOW lmao I didn’t even notice that I had received all of these responses!! My bad for not seeing this until now guys. I really appreciate all the advice, love, and support! You guys rock.

@ Rwasko: Yes, it’s severely impacted. Average GPA is a 3.7 admitted. I was slightly above that, but you’re right, I’m by no means a shoe-in.

@ AJ: I think I like UCLA and Berkeley about equally as much. It would be a no-brainer to Berkeley, but I applied to philosophy there. That said, I’m 95% sure that I can switch into psych. I just have to play my cards right.

@ edbraga: Yeah, you’re right, my app was tailored to Cal. Also, I agree, both schools consider different things. I just hope Cal considers me a bit more than UCLA did.

@ Oliver: My friend, I’m sorry, I didn’t even see your post until just now when I read your UCSD acceptance thread reply. I’m thinking that maybe I missed this thread because I took a few days off of here…I was just bummed out about UCLA. :/

However, I have good news! I spoke with an admissions rep today, and apparently my bio course (General Principles of Biology - A) was not considered a prereq when my app was evaluated. Thus, it seemed that I was missing a prereq. However, it explicitly states on assist.org that my bio class is a prereq. The admissions rep basically told me that they had made a mistake, and that I have a legit appeal case.

■■■ lol this would happen to me…but damn am I glad that things are starting to be figured out! I’m almost done with my appeal.

If I were to be rejected (again lol) from UCLA and UCB, then I would go to either Davis or UCSD. Honestly I love UCSD, but I would be a Human Dev. major there. That’s the only thing that would prevent me from SIR-ing immediately. I would probably pick UCSD in the end. It would be awesome if we went to the same school, man!

Oh, and yeah sure you can definitely read my personal statements! I’ll PM you, Oliver.
