Pomona to Hollywood: 38 miles
Harvard to Hollywood: 2,985 miles

Can you say internship?

For best name - Harvard
For best program - NYU
For best location - Pomona

screw show biz, come to Amherst! ;)

Honestly though, it sounds like you might love Pomona. Good luck on your visits!

Don't underestimate the opportunities and connections you could make at Brown. A large group of Brown alums work for Pixar Animation (now Disney) and other film production companies.

Hmmm

BUMP

Amherst, Brown, or Harvard. Whichever gave you the most money.

Just go to Pomona. Screw prestige. Pomona makes you happy.

I'm fairly certain that all of these schools will give me the same financial aid package. I've received approx. 49,000 from both Amherst and Pomona...I expect the same from Harvard if I don't get a full ride.

"Sylvain White is a Pomona alum and he directed Stomp the Yard"

Okay, there's a perfect reason to scratch Pomona off the list.

Anyways:
Harvard for the name
Amherst for the education and liberal arts experience
Brown for the open curriculum

ROFL. Aww

Amherst keeps on looking better and better...Hmm.

That's not a sufficient reason to scratch Pomona off the list. Some of these typical East Coaster opinions should not swing this decision for you. Visit. That's what will let you know.

If you visit and love Amherst, then go for it. Ditto for Pomona. Ditton for Brown. Ditto for Harvard. If at the end of the day, you just can't decide, and you like them all equally, then go for Harvard.

Amherst has an open curriculum as well. It is sweet.

Hendrix, by a mile!!

But seriously, folks, at least simplfy the problem by dropping NYU, Cornell, and Hendrix.

Then visit the remaining four, if you can. They are sufficiently different that surely one will stand out. Yeah, the Harvard NAME would be really tough to turn down, but surely the place has its flaws (not the least of which is that teaching undergrads is NOT the reason even one of its professors is there). One of the hardest things in life is differentiating the actual thing from the idea of the thing. The IDEA of Harvard is unbeatable. The ACTUAL Harvard might not be your cup of tea.

"not the least of which is that teaching undergrads is NOT the reason even one of its professors is there"

This is a great example of confusing the idea of the thing with the actual thing. How much actual experience do you have interacting as an undergrad with Harvard professors? Much less EVERY Harvard professor? You're just spouting an idea.

Just think it through carefully. If Pomona is a good fit, has the program you want, is in the location you want, and you like it after a visit, go there. But don't go there just because it's in California and has nicer weather. That would not be a good reason to decide against Harvard. I would also add that on the East Cost, Pomona is not very well known (especially when compared to Harvard).

SO...Brown, Pomona, Amherst, and Harvard. :( Hmm.

How are Brown and Harvard very different?

I am pretty sure they are all going to give me the same amount...For Harvard I may be going completely for free; my mom's income is around 35,000.

GS -- I am not in the entertainment field but know many who are. One of my neighbors was CFO at Disney Pictures... then to Revolution Studios...went to Pepperdine.

However, Harvard is king for comedy and sitcom writers. I would say Harvard for SURE if that is your path. As it does not seem to be your direction, then that "club" may not matter to you. I've also met quite a few Film/TV/Writer agents and managers -- at least 25% are Harvard grads.

So... I say Pomona unless you're going to be a writer or agent.

Asking for advice on whether or not to go to Harvard on this board is obviously going to give you the majority of responses for it, atleast from the people still in high school. Personally I think you should figure out whats most important to you and decide that way. Also, you could always get in contact with the schools to get more information about specific programs that you're interested in to get a more direct comparison. Good luck!

GRIM you CAN'T turn down a full ride from Harvard. Here is the thing with grad school, with a Harvard degree, you will EVERY option available for grad school, art school whatever. (The Director of the Namesake went to Harvard ;-) I am going to be "real" at the risk of sounding a bit harsh. The other choices would simply be lesser choices. And if you have not visited Pomona, it is a nice campus, cute, very small, but I would send people to Berkeley or UCLA before I would send them to Pomona. Amherst and Brown simply do not compare with Harvard's resources, prestige, connections, etc etc etc. Please do yourself the biggest favor you ever did for yourself and your family. TAKE THE FULL RIDE TO HARVARD. Good Luck.
