Rejecting USC After You SIR?

This is posted for a friend, all help is appreciated. My friend had his heart set on USC but got rejected. He got into UCLA and U. Chicago but his first choice was USC so he appealed it. As the May 1st deadline approaches (and knowing USC won't return appeal decisions until after the SIR deadline) he will submit his SIR to U. Chicago but wait anxiously for USC's appeal decision. Here is the question, assuming he gets in with an appeal how long will he have to wait for his financial aid offer to be emailed to him? Also, if he SIRs to USC hoping to go there after he gets in with an appeal, but afterwards it turns out he cannot go anyway due to financial aid issues, can he reject them after submitting the SIR and just go to U. Chicago? Is that looked down horribly at USC? I know some colleges don't mind about rejecting the SIR agreement - they just keep your nonrefundable deposit; is USC like that or will he need to think this through and find another plan?

Thanks again CC for the help.

USC will not require a commitment deposit until he has been presented his financial aid package for review.

If his appeal is accepted, there will be instructions included as to when he must submit a commitment deposit. He should immediately follow the instructions to respond in the affirmative contingent on financial aid and ask for an extension on paying the deposit. Be sure to get the extension IN WRITING.

If it turns out the financial aid is not enough to attend, he should clearly (and hopefully politely) let them know that he appreciates them reconsidering his application but he simply cannot afford to attend and must send his regrets.

As he waits, he should be SURE to make a commitment deposit by May 1st to a school he knows he can afford to attend.

Good luck to him!

Thank you so much alamemom, you are always so helpful. I copy pasted it to his FB wall. :)
