So I'm writing my common app and a few supplement essays. One of the supplement questions ask about your community, your role in that community, etc. I grew up in a pretty strict, materialistic, and conservative Asian culture which really had an impact on me as a person. Would it be taboo or look bad if I rejected this culture or community and say how it made me a stronger person? Or should I pick something else?

There is a difference between rejecting your community and defying some values, norms and constraints set by that community. Your wording will matter, yes.

I think you’ll be fine, as long as you’re confident in your writing abilities. Make sure not to completely dismiss your culture, but instead say how it has impacted you negatively and how you rejecting it has shaped you for the better.

If you need any help, feel free to PM me. I’d love to read your essay, or just give you some tips. :D
