My son got rejected by MIT, Caltech, and was wait-listed at Georgia Tech. What are his chances of getting in off that waitl list? Still waiting to hear back from Purdue. Any opinions on the engineering program at Purdue?
What are your son’s stats?
34 composite ACT 36 in math, 3.6 GPA unweighted, in robotics, chess, quiz bowl and teaches math at Mathnasium.
the first two were reach schools. He has taken 10 AP classes, 4,0 in all including AP calculus. He has the ability, just hasn’t shown the consistency in first two years of HS
Your son has a shot. He has pretty good stats. The admission rate of wait list is 17% which is kind of low. The GPA of your son is kind of low. Best of luck to your son.
Google “common data set” and the college of interest. Look in the file and search for waiting list.

174 were admitted of the 2150 that accepted a place on the wait list.
The one thing to make sure they know is that if they offered a spot that he would for sure enroll.
Start extolling the virtues of the other schools he got into. I am sure he will shine whereever he goes.
He should have a good chance for Purdue if EA or submit early in RD.
He has a good shot of getting off the waitlist at Georgia Tech. He also has a decent shot at getting into Purdue.
He did not submit early at Purdue for RD, but I am hopeful he will get in. Thanks for all the positive replies, means a lot during this time of stressssss:)
With his stats, Purdue is a match. He has a highly chance to be admitted. Don’t worry to much. It doesn’t help at all so stay calm and wait for the decisions.
Personally, I would have applied to UMich, UIUC, and UW-Madison as well if he applied to Purdue.
Maybe some of the UC’s too.
BTW, if he wants to be an engineer, many schools can work (including your in-state flagship).
Your son will absolutely be accepted at PU (avg ACT for freshmen is 28 in the College of Engineering). Despite this, they still are among the top ten in many many engineering categories in the country and industry loves PU engineering grads. They’re well known for many serious co-op and internship opps. Any serious Engineering student would only shortchange himself for not considering PU.
