Hey guys,
I got my rejection letter yesterday from BYU. I applied as a transfer student and my application was complete on January 15 with the final deadline being Feb 1. I am a non-LDS Nepalese person.
I have a first semester GPA of 3.94 at Mississippi University for Women.
I had a high school GPA of 3.83 and a SAT score of 1930, 1290 composite.
I was always first in my classes at high school.
I have over 450+ hours of community service.
I had my essays edited countless times.
However, I mentioned in my meeting with the LDS bishop that I drank coffee, tea and sweared sometimes up until 6-7 months ago. But, I don’t do such things now. So, I started looking at my application again but I couldn’t find any flaws. I have heard recently that BYU rejects Nepali students. Was I rejected because of my nationality?
I would be really glad if any student who was/is at BYU could give me a reason/suggestion.
Thanks!
I can say for certain that they did not reject you because of where you are from. They heartily welcome diversity, but don’t use diversity to provide preference. Getting in as a transfer is tough, and being willing to take on the honor code is huge commitment. Your stats are about average, so that is good. Have you spoken with the bishop who did your interview? Perhaps he felt your reasons for wanting to go to BYU were not strong enough? I would talk to him first, continue to work where you are, and try again. Good luck! I don’t k ow if it is a consolation or not, but I know of many others who were also denied Friday who have stats on par with or better than yours. It is just brutal competition now. My D has a 3.97 weighted GPA, with 7 AP and a 35 ACT and even she was sweating bullets about whether she would get in.
Thanks for the reply yo!
I have also applied to Brandeis and they waived my application fee without me even asking for it. Does this mean something? I am just curious.
Excluding the ecclesiastical endorsement, I have four recommendations from my university professors in this case. Do you think that I can get accepted at Brandeis?
Thanks!
I am not familiar enough with them…maybe you should do a new post with their name? Can I ask why you are leaving the school you are at now?
BYU is 97.5% LDS. I am pretty sure that has plenty to do with it if their primary obligation is to members. Did you look at the acceptance rate for transfers? Also why would you want to go to BYU? You really need a compelling reason to put up with the kind of reqs they require. Not just for admission either. It i a very specific school. The price tag cannot make up for the compromises non believers would have to make. BYU must know that.
okay, so my sister studied there and graduated about 5 years ago
I have never smoke, drank or had sex in life.
I used to swear and drink some coffee but I gave them up about a year ago. I specifically told the LDS bishop that I was clean.
I also told the bishop that I wanted to complete my education in a spiritually-safe school.
I wrote in the essays about my volunteering habits, community service and how I loved doing it.
I never mentioned that I wanted to join for the money because money is no problem for me.
The acceptance rate is about 43% for transfers but BYU acceptance rate has been decreasing steadily over the years.
My sister once told me that Nepali people had made a bad image at BYU. I always think about that as reason for my non acceptance but I could be wrong.
To slaudsmom:
I want to leave my current school because it has subpar education. I want to learn more broadly.
Who cares why they rejected you, find somewhere else. A school that has such specific requirements is not a good fit for non believers. Again, BYU knows that. If money is no object, the world is your oyster. I feel some less savvy applicants get a bit excited by the COA.
Positive BYU did not reject you because of your nationality. You have a very competitive application. I agree with what was previously said, and go talk to the leader that you spoke with.
