Rejection Letter - Ccm

I agree that it can be very discouraging trying to support your child through degree requirments, auditions, juries, performances, etc among family and friends who have no idea of what's involved. One of my friends has stated REPEATEDLY that she thinks it is wise that my son's school requires a certain number of humanities or non-music courses. Then when he wants to transfer, he will have some credits for the real degree. WHAT???

Personally, I quit playing most church gigs after hearing one too many "How nice for you to have something like music to do with your time!" sort of comments. People meant well I'm sure, but it comes off so patronizing - they wouldn't thank the other professionals they encounter in daily life using such words. I'm quite fortunate to be able to pick and choose venues.

I want to send a note of thanks to this discussion. When my daughter received her rejection letter today from CCM it was traumatic to say the least. I actually google'd CCM rejection letter, thinking that she is not the only HS senior receiving this letter today and found this thread. I'll share that she is the lead Soprano in the HS choir, President of the show Choir, requested by the Schools principe to sing at many events, good grades etc. etc. Her voice teacher (still active in roles in the opera on a part time basis) has spent an unbelievable amount of time with her to prepare her and received her undergraduate degree at CCM. I explained to her tonight that this unfortunate outcome in the long run is a painful bee sting that time will heal. I'm certain that other schools will welcome her but wonder if the list should be expanded. We are going to Baldwin Wallace, Miami, Dusquene(Pittsburgh), Ithaca and possibly DePaul in Chicago (we're waiting on the pre-audition cd results on that one. I welcome any suggestions and thank you for reading this post.

Have you looked at Oberlin, or Oklahoma City University?

I should have added that the goal for my D is music ed. I'm clueless as to why she does not want to aud at Oberlin, Ok City is quite far from Cleveland - we are trying to keep the distance within 500 miles - thanks

Ohio State has excellent voice faculty.

JUST A DAD IN OHIO,

Our daughters are going through the exact same thing and it sounds like they are involved in a lot of the same type of singing groups. As the days progress my D is searching for other places to apply. She is anxiously awaiting a response from Indiana Univ. and Maryland, however, she still makes snide remarks about CCM not wanting her! By the way, we visited Oberlin and my D felt so uncomfortable there. My D thinks people there are a little too "liberal" for her. She just did not fit in there. Our status for Baldwin Wallace has said they are reviewing things for weeks now. We also have an audition scheduled there. I am curious about Baldwin Wallace...how is Baldwin Wallace perceived in the Cleveland area? We just stumpled upon it, went to visit there and D did like the school. I don't know about you, but I cannot wait until she finds her college home and is happy! This has been quite a long and challenging process. I think Indiana's letter may come today. I will be the one getting the mail because I can't tolerate another day like we had on Wednesday! I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I just wanted to add something to thsi discussion that might be a bit encouraging for thsoe going through this nerve racking process. I was going to audition for BFA MT schools last year, but decided not to in the end, and ended up at a small liberal arts school in Maryland. My voice teacher works for Washington Opera and is in a current production, and was trained in VP at Peabody. She is amazing teacher, and this is a non audition program. I know everyone wants to go to the big name schools, but quality training can be found in the non audition programs as well. Good luck to everyone in this process! :)

DefyingGravity04--are you at Western Maryland? Thirty years ago when I was applying to college, this was great school with excellent music and theatre! I grew up a few miles from it. Glad to know you are happy there!

B W has an excellent reputation in NE Ohio. I think we are going there on 1/19 and then Miami is next. They have a great financial aid program for the entire University as well. My younger D's flute teacher and her husband (mentioned below) have high praises for B W too.

My D applied for a summer camp there, but was rejected. At that time she was not properly prepared and the home made recording did not turn out well.

For the DVD and CD for DePaul we hired a retired recording engineer who did a fabulous job for a reasonable cost. We'll see if it was worth the effort once the results come in from DePaul in Chicago.. I'm just glad 4 schools will allow an audition without the pre-audition cd requirement.

Yes . I really like the music and theater programs and they have a dual major in music and theater which is more of a BA in MT but they don't call it that. Is your child audtioning for jazz programs? One of my good friends is auditioning for jazz percussion programs.

My D is auditioning for a spot in a music education program with the goal a becoming a licensed music teacher (choir) k-12 in the future.

It looks like it is becoming a bit to late to add more schools, I'm sure all will work out by the spring.

I may call CCM next week just to confirm that they reviewed her DVD for music ed and not for voice. Then again the Cinci sweatshirt went to the clothing pile we are sending to the charities last night.

Thank goodness I know how to bake cookies.....

Just Dad,

My daughters audition date at BW is also on January 19th. Has your D been accepted to the college yet? Or, maybe they don't accept until after the audition??? We sent in everything but have not heard a thing. Just curious.

Just Dad,

Just read about the sweatshirt and shared with the moping daughter. We had a good laugh! Hey, that is a good sign!

Just Dad, if you want to add what may be a safety for your daughter, look at West Chester University in PA - I think it is within your 500 mile limit. They have a well respected music ed program and an absolutely gorgeous new state of the art music building and performing arts center. I think you can still apply to the university and then they schedule an audition after the university approves the stats for admission. Their last audition is March 4 and if your D gets into one of her choices before then, you can always cancel the audition. They let you know before you leave that day whether you get in or not. My D chose to apply there and audition in November so she could hopefully have an acceptance under her belt early. She got in for vocal performance. The one iffy thing about them is that the theory and aural skills test is counted towards admission. If you don't get a good score on all three, you don't get in - no matter how well you sing. It works against those who have not had any theory before auditioning or who don't have a good ear.

Cartera Thank you for the insight on West Chester - we'll research asap

Linnlew - No news from any schools for acceptance yet, but audition dates are locked on three (1/19 BW, 1/24 Miami, 3/1 Ithaca).

We're not purchasing any more college attire till this is over!

Or you could do what my D did - she has bought a sweatshirt at every school she visited. Fortunately, for her and me, she doesn't have a real favorite at this point. She likes wherever she is at the time. What she would really like to do is take the teachers from one, the location of another and the facilities of another and that would be her dream school.

thanks again for the suggestion on West Chester - Applications are in motion for that school and Otterbein as well. My "theory" was to have at least six on the list at one time...with Cinci out and these two in, we are back to seven...I hope that is not too much and does not back fire. My D's voice teacher insists on spacing auditions 2 weeks apart - I think that is impossible - opinion??
Linnlew if you would like to meet my wife and I at B W on the 19th it would be a pleasure to say hello in person.

Just a Dad - My D's voice teacher insists on spacing auditions 2 weeks apart - I think that is impossible - opinion??

We tried, but you have little control over some of the dates. They tell you when to come. Our worst was Rice on Monday and UCLA on Saturday. With flights to and from the east coast between to get some school time in. We had tried to plan a break there, but UCLA had one date and Rice canceled their last one, and other schools only dates conflicted with the other dates for Rice. We spread out what we could. Safety and 1 other before Christmas. Ore at the end of the season.

I had about 3 versions of the spreadsheet ready to make the adjustments as dates filled in. We lived by that spreadsheet last year.

Just a Dad, as a mom of an Otterbein student, I'm glad to see it made your daughter's list. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions for me to pass along to my daughter. Best of luck to your daughter throughout her auditions (and to you as the parent of an auditioning student).

Just A Dad,

Sure! We will have to hook up at BW on January 19th. That sounds like a plan. Our girls sound like they have a lot in common. Depending on audition times, maybe they can meet as well. My daughter loves to talk to people who share her same passion! Looking forward to it...
