Rejections: Class of 2007

Rejected...

BoCo- Dance portion doesn't count? yeah right!!!
Manhattan School of Music (Voice)- I have no idea why I didn't get in
Juilliard (Voice)- I didn't even get an audition
Yale (Early Application)- I wasn't expecting to get in anyway

PS: Does anyone else who auditioned in Voice at Purchase have an "incomplete application" (due to "lack of audition") in their MyPurchase account? I'm not sure whether they change it after they make the decision or if they just didn't process my audition for some reason. I haven't heard from them at all yet.

My D applied to a mixture of schools academic BA and BFA because we had no idea of the outcome due to all the hype and the rwalities of the situation. However, NOW it is very difficult to give up a great academic school with a BA in theatre (ones that people are dying to get into) for a BFA MT program with 3 star academics. My D is suffering as it is looking at so many programs that want to separate Mt and drama. So many schools say you do one or the other. I think she is getting very frustrated by our school and her peers who say "Why would you choose a BFA MT degree at X school over a great academic degree at Y?" She is worried she will not be competitve after graduation with a BA. Yes she would love to do a MFA some day. She is concerned about the limitations that lie in both degrees. Anyone have any sage wisdom??? How about aBM in Mt that can limit acting experience for MT.?

Rejected from SMU academically and BFA and got into Michigan academically and UNC - Chapel Hill as an OOS go figure?!! Rejected from Otterbein - that was hard to take because she really likes them> She wonders if it was because of an award that she earned and was listed on her resume but that was not noted correctly on the internet.Rejected Michigan MT and CCM MT. It has been successes mixed with rejections thank goodness. I don't ever want to live through a year like this one again. Good luck to all of you who have tried for your dreams. REMEMBER KEEP BELIEVING IN YOURSELF !!!It is not over yet!

in response to mhappiness "we are stuggling with"

You D should go to the school that she thinks she will be happiest at for the next four years. I know it is never as simple as that, because there are many mitigating factors... but following her gut, and trying to block out the "coulda, woulda, shouldas" from inside her own mind and from others who ultimately have no vested interest in where she attends, will help her to make the best choice for her. She is the one who has to attend the school. It can be hard when your peers and advisors are saying... "why wouldn't you go to such and such a school that EVERYONE else would kill to go to?" But your D is the one who is going to spend four years there... not the advisor or the peers. :)

As far as the BA/ BFA thing. Yes, the bigger BFA programs can give you a little leg up at graduation in terms of access to casting directors and agents.... However, there are MANY successful performers in Musical Theatre who did not go to a top BFA school. I think this is important to say on the "rejection thread". A rejection from a top BFA school can make a student feel as if their life long dream is no longer reachable... remember that there are many different paths to a successful career in the performing arts! Good luck to all of you who are struggling through this tough time in the process.

mhappiness, Im assuming that your asking about Baldwin-Wallace when you mentioned a BM in MT in your previous post. In just the past year, the whole curriculum has been reworked, including the acting track. Acting is no longer a weakness of the program. And while there still aren't as many classes in theatre as there are in music (thats to be expected, after all it is a BM), most of them are first rate. If your D is still having trouble, I suggest visiting the schools. I knew right when I got into BW that I wanted to go here, but for others it isn't as easy. We'd love to have your D visit, all the MTs here love meeting the prospectives and we'll show her a good time. If you or your D have any other specific questions about the program please PM me. :)

KatMT thanks for your words of wisdom! Yes we all wonder if I.... and you never know until you just throw yourself in and do it. All of our kids will be doing that soon. You ARE right the fit that is best for HER is what matters..the problem is she can see herself being happy several directions. So that is the problem hoping that she chooses the best one for her. So many people have told her if you can't see yourself doing ANYTHING else you are right for MT...she instead says "I have alot of talents and could use them in different ways." I have to say ALL of her friends that are doing MT feel that they would die if they did anything else.

BWMT09-- I do know that BW has added more acting classes and she has visited. The kids were wonderful to her. She thought there was alot of talented kids at that school. I was actually referring to Wheaton College in Illinois where she has been accepted and could get a BM. She has visited there also and really lkied the kids. She is concerned about their acting program. Thankyou for your offer to pm you. I will later.

mhappiness... I remember when I was in college studying musical theatre people would say the same thing... "if you can't see yourself doing ANYTHING else you are right for MT".. it used to make me mad, because, like your D "I felt that I had a lot of talents and could use them in different ways". :) Once I was out of school working professionally I realized that what they meant by saying that was that if other things will make you happy, you may decide that the lifestyle of an actor is not or you. This is not a decision that you have to make when you are 18... most people make that decision once they have started pursuing the career professionally. Even some of her friends who feel like they would "die" if they did anything else, may find as they grow older that there are other things that may interest them more... directing, teaching, writing... or, they may continue to feel that perorming is the life for them... but, there are many lives in the theatre in addition to performing, but all of the performing training (and the educaional experience) help lay the ground work for many different life paths.

i think this is a smart statement. and i wholeheartedly agree.

rejections:

my boyfriend got rejected from Syracuse and NYU. He's ok. i think a lot of it was academic. nyu's letter said that NYU received 34,000 applications this year, and could only take 4,000! That's tough for the university itself....but then you factor in Tisch...and WHOOOOOOOOOO
I haven't heard from either NYU or Syracuse ....but i hope he gets some acceptances soon!!!!
im hoping for him!

Rejected from Emerson...and it was my number one. It hurts less than i was expecting though.

merhh

Not to be "morbid" but when did you get rejected? My daughter is still waiting for a letter. She also was rejected - today in fact- by her "dream" school and like you didn't feel nearly as bad as she thought she would. All of you are showing incredible and admirable resilience and perseverence which will serve you well where ever you ultimately land.

Hello,

I decided to join this website so I could vent and find comfort in the company of others who did not get into schools either. I am trying to look on the bright side... but I was not accepted into any of the schools I was considering. Unfortunately, this leaves me shocked that I did not get into one and left without a college that I actually want to go to. I know these schools are incredibly difficult to get into, but it just feels horrible getting rejection after rejection after rejection.. I'm not sure if i should go to one year of college and apply to theater schools again, or go through two years, transfer, and finish out at a liberal arts school. Later, mastering in acting or mt. any suggestions, ideas, or sympathies..

These latest postings of both rejections, acceptances, and waitlisting are very interesting. We can see the types of schools individuals applied to and the end results. In some cases, there hasn't been much of a range of schools which can leave you in a difficult predicament. Next year's hopefuls please take note and start developing a balanced list of schools to apply for.
