(Relatively) high major GPA but low cumulative GPA

Wonder if it’s even meaningful to bother applying to tier-1 graduate programs in poli sci / East Asian studies (like Harvard’s) with a 3.6-3.7 overall GPA but a 3.85-3.9 major GPA (from a top 30 school). The range as a result of possible GPA change before application. I understand that GPA doesn’t 100% predicts grad school admission, but I’m just really worried that a 3.6-3.7 cumulative GPA would be a deal breaker for top programs…

Yes, a 3.6 GPA is fine. Make sure your personal statements and writing sample have been polished to perfection; they’re crucial factors in admissions.

First place you ask is your own dept advisors. They’ll know and you need their endorsement, anyway.

And himanities grad school isn’t like undergrad, where you just take lots of courses. Generally, you need a research topic interest you’ve already got some basis in.

Thank you!

Many, many years ago I was in the same situation. I was a math major. I am under the impression that graduate schools that I applied to completely ignored my bad grades in a couple of art courses. I don’t think that they cared at all how I did in art or art history.

Other factors (eg, definitely references, also research or internships) will of course be very important.

I don’t think that this is a deal breaker.

The major GPA, which most likely consists primarily of courses taken in your last few years of college are most important. You should definitely get a good look.
