Brown and Stanford strike me as laid back.

I know you're going to tell me I'm crazy, but I find Cornell to be kind of laid back. The classes expect a lot of the students, but the students don't seem out to get eachother. Yeah, they work hard, but they're not afraid to play a little bit too! Definately not the most laid back school out there though...it is stressful at times.

Every Ivy got into this thread except Columbia. What about them? I visited and it seems pretty laid back to me???

I don't know about Columbia but I've heard that Yale is very intense and competitive. I don't deny that they're friendly - I've met many Yalies and all of them have been beyond friendly - but I highly doubt that Yale is laid back - it seems like a very intense and competitive atmosphere - the most pre-professional ivy except for harvard.

As someone from Yale, I understand that outsiders might think of the place as competitive. No doubt we have competitive people; some are probably cutthroat, too. Yet such is the case at every school.

If you look at Yale in the gestalt, I don't think you'll find it to be intensely competitive. People want to succeed, but even more than that they want their friends to succeed. (I mean, that would be easier than succeeding on my own, right ;-) )

So you're entitled to your opinion, but I think that if you were to come and stay awhile you'd change your mind.

Syracuse U seems likes it's a really relaxed school.

Most easy going,relaxed,comfortable,friendly,hospitable campus-old school,gracious-amazing place!

I was at Colgate last Fall as a junior in high school. When we arrived at the admin office we met four first year students who were there to speak to a friend. They came over to my dad and me and started talking to us about how much they loved Colgate and felt so at home there. When they found out I was into theater they told me about a 24 hour theater slam they were taking part in that night and invited me to visit.

The tour guide we had was very funny and gave us what we felt was an honest assesment of the school. The kids we saw around campus were laughing and some said hi even if they were with a group of friends.

Thus, I had a great experience at Colgate and have heard mostly good things about the social life of the school. I'm applying there without hesitation.

By the way I am only applying to lacs and I enjoyed my visits to all 7 of the places I am applying to. Hopefully my overnight visits will only add to my excitement.

Really Stanford is well known and even prides itself for being much more laid back than most other top universities...serously

Yeah, even UChicago says that it's pretty chill.
