Religion and College Essays

Now that the Common App is coming out in less than a week, I am beginning to think about topics for my essay. I was thinking about writing about how being Jewish has given me a strong sense of community and how it has affected my work ethic and what not (and maybe even a little about how frustrating it is when other races are given advantages in college admittance, but Jewish applicants are not (we are a race, there is genetic evidence)), but I am not sure if secular colleges will appreciate the use of religion to try to gain admittance. Is this an okay topic to write about, or should I find something more secular to focus my essay on?

Thanks!

You should write about something that defines you as a person, something you feel passionate about. If you want to write about that lean towards conveying who you are, and not what you think is fair and unfair. I think it is a great topic to write about, but just remember that colleges want to hear about you :)

I think using religion is kind of dangerous…

You shouldn’t worry about whether or not adcoms from secular colleges will appreciate your use of religion, but you should stay away from mentioning how affirmative action works against you.

^^ agreed.
