i have a question about religious schools in California... how severely are they incorporated into the educations or student life at:

Santa Clara University
Loyola Marymount University
San Diego University

I am avidly agnostic and i really could care less about being around atheist and/ or other people who are religious, but i think theres a certain amount of it i can take. Please be detailed and explain how and why each school is religious as it is, and can it be avoided?

University of San Diego
University of Santa Clara

sorry for the names, american idol distracted me... lol

Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount are run by the Jesuit order. The Jesuits are the most liberal Catholic order. I went to a Jesuit school and the way that I felt religion was a call for tolerance and a commitment to community service. I also had to take two semesters of theology (we could choose from several different theology classes and they had an intellectual not a dogmatic focus).

USD is affiliated with a much more conservative vein of Catholicism. Expect parietals and the faith to play a more active role in your experience.

if you're agnostic why specifically look at privates with a religion attached to it? theres plenty of privates in cali that are not affiliated.

I am the parent of a student who has never been to church, and who has been admitted to SCU for the fall.

You shouldnt worry about attending SCU if you are an agnostic. We found zero indication that your religious beliefs would serioualy affect your experience at SCU.

As part of their core curriculum, SCU requires every student to compete three Religious Studies classes, but when you look at some course options (below is just one list of options) you can see that the courses offered are very diverse and inclusive:

Religious Studies
SCTR 26 Gender in Early Christianity
RSOC 81 Islam
RSOC 91 Native American Religions
TESP 131 Feminist Theology
TESP 139R RSS: Catholic Theology and Human Sexuality
RSOC 144 Gender, Body, and Christianity
TESP 162 Feminist Visionary Ethics
RSOC 164 Religion, Race and Ethnicity in America
RSOC 168 Gender and Judaism
RSOC 170R Religion, Gender, and Globalization
RSOC 184 Race and Religion in the United States
RSOC 185 Gender and Asian Religions

I don't know anything about the other two schools, but SCU is an excellent choice!

Good luck!
