REMS Semi-Finalists :)

Hello everyone,

After receiving news today about the REMS program, I thought I'd start a thread for anyone who is interviewing for REMS (or for anyone who isn't :) )! I'm thrilled to say I will be attending! I am beyond excited. Congrats to all, and has anyone else heard any good news?

Congrats! Were you informed by mail or email

Congrats! But isn’t it a little early for notification?

Thank you  I heard through the mail, and was actually not expecting it at all as I had read on the website that we were notified mid-February. The REMS weekend begins the 17th so I guess hearing this early makes sense.

congrats bailey42! It is quite an honor, given the competitive nature of the program.

Golfdude… We do notify REMS applicants early b/c our finalists have to make travel arrangements to come to campus for an overnight interviewing event.

@MConklin

Have all people been notified?

Did anyone receive a rejection or they are mailed later on?
How many people get called for an interview (approx)?

For some reason, I thought that REMS was the Renaissance Scholars program, not the Medical Scholars program.

Congrats and good luck to all in the competition!

Approximately 50 students of the 900-1000 that apply are invited as finalists. Of the 50 that interview during our REMS interviewing event, approximately 12-15 will be offered admission to the program. It is our most competitive program, and those students selected as finalists should consider it an accomplishment to be proud of. By the same token, students not selected as finalists should not be discouraged. Many students denied admission to the REMS program are admitted to the school, enroll, and still do wonderful things (including graduating and gaining acceptance to med school!)

So I assume everyone who has been offered an interview has been notified?

I want to know if the people apply the REMS are mainly from local? I am from California, I don’t know what the main student body will be.

Do those who applied for a combined admissions program recieve a decision for their acceptance at the university in general at the same time as a decision regarding an interview for the combined admissions program?

kjiggy… Students from all over the world apply for REMS. In fact, very few of the REMS finalists are typically ‘local’. We usually have at least a few international students, in addition to students from all over the country, at our REMS finalist event.

iceberg… Everyone who has been offered an interview should have been notified, though there are still potentially two or three more candidates that may be offered an interview. The students that are not offered an interview as a REMS finalist should get their letters today or tomorrow if they haven’t already.

Pepper09… Students selected as REMS finalists are admitted to the University. Notification for our other CAPS programs has not yet been sent, and may not be for a few weeks yet.

I had an amazing time at the REMS weekend! Met some great people who have accomplished so many great things! It was a very humbling experience. MConklin, do you by any chance know when decisions are mailed out? I’m so anxious I have never fallen in love with any program/school as it did with REMS at U of R!

bailey42… Glad to hear that you had a great time and had a chance to meet some accomplished people. It is always a humbling experience for me as well!

The final decisions should be mailed within the next 10 days, though that depends in part on the schedule of the medical school staff/faculty, so I can’t make any guarantees. I will update you when I get a better sense for what to expect.

Hi MConklin - I am waiting with eager anticipation about the REMS decision this week When are the decisions going out… will all students be receiving the decision at the same time (both acceptance and rejection). I am really hoping that I made it - loved both the program and the campus.

Hi markyjr… Letters should be going out soon, they are just waiting on a few more signatures. The REMS admit, alternate, and deny letters should be going out together.

Hi MConklin - Would you be able to give approximate numbers for how many people were accepted, how many were chosen as alternates, and how many denied?
Thanks!

About 17 were selected as finalists, and we expect to enroll 10-12 of those students. About 15 were selected as alternates, and the remaining finalists, which I believe is about 23, were denied admission to the REMS program. I don’t know that these numbers are exact, but I know they are very close.

I thought there were a total of 45 REMS semi-finalists. Is there a typo in the number of alternates as 5 seems a more plausible number to fill in for the finalists who do not accept…Thanks for the info and congrats to all those who made it as finalists and also the alternates.
