Rensselaer Reputation

I was just wondering something. Rensselaer is already known as a top engineering school, and in recent years application numbers shot up dramatically. This is a good indicator of Rensselaer's growing name. Do you think Rensselaer would ever be a top 25 school, or ever be the next MIT? Thoughts please:]

I don’t have stats, but I would assume that most engineering and related programs are growing rapidly. So, Rensselaer is probably not an anomaly in this but representative of a general trend. On the other hand, I believe that tech. schools like Rensselaer are in position to encroach on the ivies.

in 2006 Newsweek published an article about the 25 “New Ivies” (you can google ‘new ivies’ and get the article). RPI made the list of schools that they felt were just as good as ivies. There were liberal arts schools, private schools, state universities, quite a mix.

^ This was a post made by an admissions officer on the RPI accepted students board in response to a question regarding what are considered RPI’s peer universities.

At this given moment, RPI isn’t a name many people have heard of. Drop RPI in a conversation and most people won’t recognize it like they will MIT. For those that have heard of it tend to know it’s a really really good school.

It may not be that well known now, but give it a few years and I guarantee you’ll see it recognized on a much greater scale.

-Doom

Why do you believe that?

Not to hate on our student/faculty population, but I don’t see any particular reason to believe RPI will have a sudden boost in fame.

Does anyone know how many people were accepted/the acceptance rate this year?

I don’t think that they released that yet.

The last thing I remember reading on the subject is the March 2 story here:

http://news.rpi.edu/update.do?catcenterkey=46

According to Dr. Jackson’s town hall meeting speech, 38.5% of 14559 applicants were accepted. Previous years rate was 39.9%.
