Rent VS Buy For Major-Related Textbook

This may seem a silly question, but is there really a need to keep a textbook from my first class that is toward my major? The course is a level 200. I only ask because the cheapest I can get the book is $200. I can rent it (Kno bookstore on iPad) for $100 for 6 months. So what are the chances I'll ever touch it after this year? Is it worth $100?

Will the book be used again for your future classes? If not, then just rent it or see if your college’s library has it on reserve.

If you can find the PDF of the text you are looking for in the internet, you don’t have to pay anything! I don’t think you need to bring your textbook to class all the time but if you much prefer to write on your book or if you don’t like viewing it on a small laptop screen then this may not be a good idea.

I wouldn’t say so unless it’s like stuff you know you might have to refer back to eventually. I’ve kept every math book I’ve had except calc III (although I have another book that encompasses calc III in it). I do find myself referring back to them sometimes.

I think I’m just going to rent the eBook version. That way I can still take notes in it, and if it turns out to be a vital book I can upgrade it to a full purchase without paying the full price. Again, thanks for all the help!

My son bought most of his books used and cheap on Amazon. He used the free shipping feature from Amazon Student. He is now re-selling those books on facebook sites for students of his college – at the same price that he paid for them. As a result, the books have been free.

One set of exceptions have been the internet web cards that are required for some classes - they needed to be bought new each semester by each student. In some cases, it was cheaper to buy a complete set new on Amazon to get the card than to buy a used book and the new access card.

personally id buy. i find renting is pretty expensive as it is. i buy mine online. those i dont want, i sell. (usually to other people or online, but i sold some back to the store, even ones i got online)
