Repeat?

Hi, so I'm applying to schools right now. I'm currently in ninth grade and on my canidate profile checked that I was applying for tenth. The problem is, that the more I look at these schools, the more I realize that I want to have the FULL experience and I feel as if I should repeat ninth grade. The problem is that I cannot do this if I don't receive a certain amount of FA. So, should I call the schools saying I'm applying for ninth, or should I keep with applying for tenth and if I am accepted (hopefully) with FA call the school(s) and see if I can switch to ninth?

Personally, I’d say go in as a 10th grader. I know people who started at a new high school in 10th grade because their middle school went from 6th to 9th grade, and they were happy with their decision. Although you’ll be missing the full high school experience at this new high school, you’ll be in classes with people your age who have had the same experiences as you. Besides, freshman year is a tough year academically and socially, so who wants to relive it?

I’m on the younger side of my grade, so if I repeated I would probably be one of the oldest in the grade but it wouldn’t be like I was two years older than everyone. I don’t want to repeat because I disliked my freshman year, in fact so far it has been the opposite. Repeating would allow me to take more APs, more sports, etc. I just feel that I would not have enough time to fully experience what the schools have to offer, especially if I decide to spend a year abroad. I’m applying to Andover, Groton, St. Pauls, and Hotchkiss if this changes anything.

Repeating is an excellent decision, one that is generally supported (often encouraged) by the schools. Nearly one third of students repeat, so there is no stigma attached to it. Ages vary widely in bs - you will likely know many other repeaters.

What´s about repeating if you apply for FA? Wouldn´t it hurt your chances, since the school would have to grant a big amount of money for one more year, although you could also continue in the next regular grade?

That’s what I was thinking. I heard something about when some schools accept you they give you the choice to repeat or not ? Don’t know if this is true.
