Repeating a Course for third time!! Help!!!

hello everyone, i am currently a student studying Civil engineering at the James Clark school. I have just finished retaking a class for the second time and i am afraid i may not pass it again. I have checked online and it says that a petition form for an exception to policy must be completed if i need to enroll in a course for the third time.

The problem is, it says exceptions to policy will be accepted under rare and extraordinary circumstances. Now i'm worried because i put in alot of effort into the course by going to office hours and asking the professor for help and have still under-performed.

I plan on graduating in three semesters and i am afraid of being dismissed from the school of engineering, after all the courses i have already taken. If anyone can provide any helpful tips, or know anybody who has gone through the same situation and please explain it would be helpful. Thanks

P.S this is the only course i have been struggling with

What course is this? I hate to be a downer, but do you think that maybe engineering isn’t right for you? I guess the answer depends on the class. Don’t panic, but make sure to prepare for the worst. Do you have any back up majors? I’d imagine that an engineer could handle a major like math or computer science, maybe even architecture.

I think by now you’d have found out if you passed or failed. My friend wanted to be an astronomy major and had to take calc three times, so I guess it’s not impossible. Is there anyway that you could take the class at a community college, where it would be easier?

If you’re still unsure what to do, make an appointment with an engineering advisor ASAP. I’ve heard of plenty of students getting exceptions and pardons for bad grades. I personally don’t think your status as an engineering major is in jeopardy, especially if the rest of your classes have gone smoothly.

Thanks for the reply, this course is chemistry based and since i am in the infrastructure track this is the only chemistry based course i have to take, therefore, my engineering track does not really involve the materials taught in this class.

I did not mention this at first but the reason is because my sister has been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, therefore, i was depressed throughout the semester and unable to focus. I still tried to put in alot of effort but i was still not focused. Unfortunately, it has affected my whole semester but this is the only class i have ever failed.

My professor has confirmed with me that she will submit a letter of support but she has not, and i already turned in my exception to policy letter. Therefore, i am stuck in a bad situation. I have contacted the professor 2 days ago and called many times with no response, and i have 4 business days left. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas that would be very helpful. Thanks

Sorry that this is so late. Hopefully your issue has been resolved by now. If I were you, I’d contact your advisor and figure out how you’d document a family emergency.

UPDATE: i have been approved to repeat the course in the spring semester. Once i was notified of the decision i immediately registered for the class right away. Now the problem is that i am number 8 on the wait-list out of 65 seats :/. I emailed my advisor and he told me to contact my professor and if she is ok with it, the professor has to send the advisor an email to oversubscribe me for the class. Now i feel bad for bothering the professor with another issue of having her send another email. I will email her to oversubscribe me for the class and hopefully i can get in.
