About learning music, they try to encourage us to learn music on our own because that’s what we will have to do when we move to NYC and we have a day or even hours to learn a song for an audition. We WON’T have cds then…

But there are plenty of accompanists who you can pay to record music for you to practice with. And very very often, professors will let you record them playing the accompaniment.

Learning songs has never been an issue. There are ways to get your music played and recorded, if you need it.

I received my invite to audition before I sent in my repertoire list (I sent in the application but planned to mail the list separately). I think this was some kind of fluke because admissions officers have told me in the past that it holds up the screening process, but either way it works for me!

Yes my d sent her Rep list separate from the Application. She was notified within 2 days that it was still missing and would hold up the ability to schedule an audition.

Additionally, 2 staff members from the theatre dept. emailed her to remind her to send it in as the application would not be processed until it was in. And it could hurt getting the audition date requested.

She had her invite within 24 hrs of submitting the Rep list.

I believe that just about all musical theatre programs will expect students to learn music on their own (and have classes to help teach the skills needed to do so to students who do not have a strong musicianship background coming in). As ShelleySings says… you will have to do this then you are working professionally and have a day or even hours to learn a song for an audition. You WON’T have cds then… Most schools will also have accompanists (faculty and/or students that you can pay separately) who will record music for you.

I was looking at the UMich MT audition requirements today, which are noted as updated August 2010, and under the Written Requirements section, it only asks for a resume and personal statement, no mention of a rep list. Is this a new change or am I not looking in the right place? Thanks!

I started filling out my Common App, and on the Michigan Supplement it still asks for the rep list, so I’m assuming everyone still has to send it in…
