Reporting "Approximate Time Spent" for activities

Hello all, I have a question regarding the "Approximate time spent" on an activity. I have just completed my junior year and I will be a senior applying to colleges in the fall. I have also just recently begun doing research at a local university, and I am very passionate about it and I will continue to take part in it throughout the entire summer as well as my entire senior year and the summer afterward.

By the time I am writing my common app, I will only have taken part in the research for about 15 weeks or so. However, because I plan to take part in it throughout the entire year, should I put down 50 weeks a year? (2 weeks or so off of the 52 in a year due to other commitments, etc) Or should I put down just 15?

Anyone please?

I would recommend putting down the full 50 weeks. I don’t feel that it is wrong to state that you are participating in something currently and will continue beyond the time at which you send your app.

Thank you, wrightm, for the input. I was thinking the same thing as well. Also, I began the research very late in my 11th grade year (in June to be exact), and by begin I mean I met with the professor and learned the basics of the research, etc. I began doing the lab work about two days after the school year ended.

With this in mind, would I be able to “check” the 11th AND 12th grade boxes for participation? Because technically I became involved in the 11th grade, though very late. However, actual lab work was not done until a few days into the summer. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just check off 11 and 12. To be completely I really don’t think they investigate each EC you list. It would take way too much time for all the applicants each college receives. I know you want to be honest but such a minute detail such as the one you listed is not going hurt you in the application process.
