Reputation and Academic Quality

Hi, I’m going to be attending UVA this fall to study economics (and hopefully finance if I get admitted into McIntire after my sophomore year)! I’m very excited because from what I understand, McIntire is amazing, the campus is beautiful, the social and extracurricular scene is awesome… I’m so excited!

I actually sat in on a history lecture one time and loved the way the professor engaged the class.

However, I just wanted to get a better idea of the overall reputation of UVA as a whole. I know it’s usually a top-25 school, but are there any statistics that really point to its success areas outside of finance? How about its economics, pre-med, and engineering? Is UVA recognized to be as good as schools of similar rank? What would you say about its peer institutions and its prestige?

UVA grads are being recruited by hundreds of companies and attending grad school around the country. With seven undergraduate school and colleges, we are far from being just a business school! UVa is half the size of many large research universities. Therefore, sometimes some of its programs are not as widely recognized as programs with many more grad students, many more profs and many more research grants. At the same time, UVa’s size make it easier to get a great undergrad education, vs. some depts. at larger universities place most of their emphasis on graduate programs and research.

its medical school is lower than its undergrad ranking which doesnt necessary mean it’s bad

I would think you would have already sought out this type of information when you were making decisions about which college to attend. What would you like to get from this thread that you have missed so far?

@lostaccount idk, bragging rights? Reputation and prestige are subjective to a degree anyway.
