I am trying to compare these high ranked universities (according to the Times, first and second ranked universities in the world) for an academic applying for a tenured faculty position.
Incidently I would also loke to know which universities are considered the best in the following field:Business Management, Economics Computer Science, Engineering & Medical Science.
Please provide proof for your assertations (links to web pages, statistics, research surveys etc.)
A College Confidential wide poll would be VERY VERY nice !!!

Gathering data now ...

I'm pretty sure you can safely say MIT will win out in technology, CS, Engineering, etc.

I think Harvard has a better rep if you just run around the world telling people I went to Harvard. MIT would probably look more impressive to people in science/math. But I think in terms of tenured faculty position it would be more the individual(you) rather than the institute.

business management - about the same
economics - about the same
computer science - MIT > Harvard
engineering - MIT > Harvard
medical science - Harvard > MIT

That is nice guys, but I would like some conclusive evidence supporting your assertions. Could you provide some authentic references supporting your statements? Rationalize if possible.

for something as diaphanous as reputation?

The problem is that for some fields, it's just not possible to make a definitive ranking, no matter how much you wish you could. It just doesn't matter.

A lot of biologists, for example, spend their careers bouncing back and forth between Harvard and MIT. MIT undergrad, Harvard grad school, MIT postdoc, Harvard faculty position.

It's not a question of one being tangibly "better" than the other. They're both great.

^^^ and we have another one in the making eh Dr.Mollie ;)

vampiro-- Sorry, didn't get the joke. Who is Dr.Mollie?

That would be me.

MIT undergrad, (soon to start) Harvard grad school.

Hi Mollie, what will be your Ph.D. major/thesis on in Harvard?

Also, can you keep your MIT email after you graduate?

I'm entering the program in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, but I don't have to come up with a PhD thesis topic for a little over another year. I haven't even chosen a lab yet; how could I choose a thesis topic?

When you graduate, your email changes from @mit.edu to @alum.mit.edu.

molliebatmit-- What was your major at MIT? Which grad school are you going to at Harvard?

you're silly, harvardguy. how do you ever expect anyone to take you seriously?

pebbles-- Look at my posts on
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=180271

Do I look silly now?
People DO seem to be taking me seriously.

it is exactly that thread that invalidates everything you have and will ever contribute to the discussion.

pebbles-- Really? So what is your opinion about the topic of this thread other than that I am stupid? Which university is more reputed OVERALL? In Harvard's support I give you Times Higher Education Supplement rankings and Academic Ranking of World Universities. What about you?

I'm a double-major in biology and brain and cognitive sciences at MIT; I'll be entering the Biological and Biomedical Sciences PhD program, which I guess is administered through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, but is actually located within the medical school.

Harvard and MIT are both absolutely outstanding schools, and it's silly to quibble over which is "better" -- particularly when a large number of current faculty members at each school did their training at the other.

You know, it's a little like election time, when they say on the news "Candidate X leads Candidate Y, 51% to 49%!" and they make a big deal out of it, but the margin of error on the poll is +/- 3%. In the same way, it's silly to make a big deal out of rankings when two schools are both clearly excellent -- you might get a result out of the rankings, but that doesn't mean it reflects any objective truth about the two schools.

From what I hear, all the cool kids go to MIT.

I'm inclined to take a nap right now, actually.
