How did/will your senior ask for a letter of recommendation? Do you write a note requesting or asking if that specific person would write a letter of recommendation? Or do you ask in person? My Son is at that point right now and I'm not sure of the etiquette.

If you’re able to, ask in person. Make sure your son is doing all the asking and that you’re not doing it for him. I’m a senior and I asked one teacher on the last day of junior year, and unfortunately had to ask another teacher by email-but it was a very courteous email that explained i planned to see her in person but that i was just emailing her so that i am not suddenly jumping it on her in the beginning of the school year (i had to email because it was over the summer and i couldn’t really go see her). and once they’ve finished the letter, get a thank you card and have your son write a personal note-because really they’re doing a great favor.

Jmoney - thanks for the advice. Unfortunately he is just getting around to asking his teachers/mentors for recommendations. He will definitely write a thank you note. That’s a given.

I actually just asked my teacher today for a recommendation and I’m asking another one tomorrow.

Definitely ask in person. It seems more sincere and appropriate. I refused to email my teachers over the summer because I wanted to ask them when I could see them. Only email or write a note if the recommendation is urgent and your son isn’t able to see them.
