Ds wants a letter of recommendation from one of his AP teachers (online course). How does one go about this in junior year? In what form do we ask for it? A letter? Common App (2011-2012 doesn't come out until August 1st I believe)? Of course, he's not sure where he is applying yet.

Any advice regarding the process would be appreciated.

My D1 approached the teachers she was requesting letters of recommendation from at the end of junior year. Since these were “in person” teachers, and she had known them both in and out of the classroom, she just approached them at the end of class or end of day. She had prepared a one page resume summing up her, both academically and EC wise so they could see the whole picture.

How does your son communicate with the online teacher now? If he emails him, or uses an online course management system, I would say sending a formal request in the normal method that he would contact him about class. If/when the teacher says he will provide one, then I’d follow up with a quick thank you and the resume.

Thank you so much. I think I was unclear. In what form do we ask her to write it? In the form of a letter? On the LOR form in the Common App? The Common App for 2011-2012 won’t be available online until August 1st. Or do certain colleges have their own forms they like recommenders to use?

Check with the HS counselor for what she/he has been seeing this recent cycle. Our school went through a transition a couple of years ago so now a teacher writes an on line letter of recommendation and that can be tapped, either to go to the Common Ap or to be run off for other uses (such as scholarship applications). Made the teacher’s lives better, for sure!

If that sort of system isn’t available at your high school, perhaps it would be worth suggesting.
