Requesting a roommate who got in ED

Hello all,
I got accepted regular decision to enter cal poly in the fall of 2016. I have not committed to cal poly yet because I am still waiting until March for a few other schools to reply. One of my friends got into cal poly through early decision and has already applied for housing. I was wondering if I will still be able request to be a roommate with my friend when I apply for housing in March if I decide to attend cal poly. Since I heard housing is on a first come first served basis, is it possible that my friend who got in through ED and applied for housing will have already been placed with roommates before I apply for housing?

I think you can be roommates, and I think your ED friend secured the housing for you too if you decide to room together.

I don’t believe you’ll be in the queue for a spot until you accept. If he accepted and submitted housing, it’s likely he’s already paired. I’d recommend you room with a stranger anyway. Your social and professional circle will be MUCH larger if you do.

I found the housing faq it says “Students can edit their Housing Application - i.e. roommate preferences, Learning Community preferences, etc., until the May deadline.” I guess this means that we have until May to list eachother as roommate preferences.
Also would it be a good idea to live in a three person dorm so I have one established friend while also getting to meet one new person?

You’ll have an established friend at CP whether you live with him or not

I guess I’ll have to think about it for a while to see what I’m gonna do. Thanks for the advice!

You’ll be fine either way. There’s a comfort in rooming with someone you know. That comfort however can impede your ability to step beyond where it’s easy and comfortable to grow your circle of friends and colleagues. My son went to CP from OOS along with one of his best friends. They didn’t room together, but they do now that they are off campus. Like I said, it’s good either way…strengths and vulnerabilities of both approaches.

@Alwaysarunner - You will be able to room with your friend who was accepted ED if he puts down your name and applicant ID on his housing app and you put his information down on your housing app. Roommates are not paired up until after everyone is accepted. Changes can be made to the housing app until May. Housing priority is by date that housing is secured (ie. payment made, online application filled out and signed form submitted). If your friend submitted his housing app (and payment etc.) the first day, then he will have priority over others submitting after that date, and if he chooses to room with you, then you will be given the same priority. I believe that is how it works, but you can also call housing and they can answer any of your questions. They were very helpful when I called! Good luck!

Good to know!
