Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college EVERY YEAR.

I think 100 community service hours per year is ridiculous. While it IS great to do community service, it's missing the point if you're only doing it because it's required.

*According to this Barack Obama and Joe Biden: The Change We Need | Service, it's 100 hours a year for a $4000 tax credit. A tax credit is definitely an incentive to do community service... but at the same time, isn't it kind of like getting paid to do something you shouldn't be doing for money anyway?

America Serves | Change.gov is Obama's new web site you can find out about the 100 community service hours in college every year and his plan for others.

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

AMom, take a look around the site. Does it look finished? It looks very sparse currently. Why would a site that looks very much under construction be trusted more than Obama's many mentions of his plan to give a $4000 tax credit? It has come up during speeches, in debates, do you really think two days later he's going to turn his tax credit into a required service plan for college students?

I dunno, it's vague whether he wants to make the 100 hours community service per year mandatory for college students, or only for the ones getting the $4000 tax cut. Mind you, at that rate it would be $40 per hour, which isn't bad. I don't have any problems with this as a voluntary thing, but I will be very annoyed if is mandatory.

I am even more vexed at the proposed 50 hours per year apparently wanting to be forced into high school students. I may have already graduated myself, but I remember when I was a high school student and even the 10 hours required for graduation seemed too much for me.

At my school, we have to do 10 hours of community service a year in high school (middle schoolers don't have to do anything)- which I think is ridiculous. 100 hours a year for a college student? That's insane!

Notice the first paragraph starts with "when you choose to serve". It's then implied in the second paragraph.

I sincerely doubt that Obama would back off of his campaign promise before he even gets into office. It's almost certainly $4000 dollars for 100 hours of community service, not mandatory service.

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free.

"A plan so that all college students WHO conduct 100 hours of community service RECEIVE a universal and full refundable tax credit..."

Those who do it, get rewarded.

Although if it is required, that would seriously take away from the community service and just make a chore. Let people do it if they want to do it.
